Job responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities for the role include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring surgeries are prepared appropriately for the days patients in accordance with current regulations.
- Reviewing the appointment diary at the start of each planned procedure and ensuring the appropriate instrument sets are selected.
- Preparing, mixing and handling dental materials in accordance with manufacturers instructions; adhering to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations and Safety Data sheets.
- Meeting the needs of the patients by monitoring, supporting and reassuring each individual according to their specific needs, providing appropriate advice when required. This may include recognising and interpreting behaviours, especially those associated with anxious patients and dealing with them accordingly.
- Providing Oral Health Education to patients and preparing information on Oral Health promotion, working within the boundaries of your training.
- Managing the patient appointment system and dental records (manual and electronic)
- Disinfecting or sterilising all equipment in accordance with Defence Primary Healthcare (Dental) Infection Prevention Control policy and manufacturers instructions.

Due to COVID 19, there is now a requirement for dental clinical staff to be fit tested for a FFP3 mask, which has to be worn when managing a patient who is undergoing an aerosol generating procedure (AGP). The successful candidate will be fit tested prior to commencing employment.
Requests to work flexibly and/or part time will be considered, taking into account business needs. Please note the salary will be pro-rata where part time hours are undertaken.
This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Band 4 Civilian Dental Nurse in the Dental Centre Chepstow to cover maternity leave. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. This post will therefore begin on your appointment and will end on 01/12/2024. You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.
If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 3 years). At the end of the posting you will return to your previous MoD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. There is no requirement to deploy as this is met by our uniformed personnel, but you will form the continuity of care required by our patients when based at home.
