Job summary
The department of Vascular surgery are looking to recruit a middle grade level doctor (ST3+ level) and the successful applicants will be part of the surgical on call rota at Morriston Hospital.
The post is on a fixed term basis for 12 months.
There is ample time available for a suitable appointee to undertake research towards a higher degree if desired.
At present there are 10 Vascular surgeons serving Swansea site in Swansea Bay University Health Board. The majority of these surgeons have sessions in both Morriston and Singleton Hospitals aswell as commitments in Hywel Dda healthboard but all major surgery and emergency intake occur on the Morriston site.
Swansea provides elective and emergency Vascular surgical services to Swansea and the Neath/Port Talbot area which amounts to a population of around 400,000.
The well established Vascular unit has a National reputation providing local and regional services.
The overall Health Board allocation is over £1bn and staffing complement of over 17,000.
Swansea Bay University Health Board provides services to around 600,000 people, primarily serving the populations of Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and the Western Vale of Glamorgan and their respective communities. In addition, the LHB provides a large range of regional and sub-regional services, including Burns and Plastic surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Forensic Mental Health and Learning Disability Services.
Main duties of the job
You will provide a clinical service in conjunction with your colleagues under the direction of a Consultant Surgeon, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
You will contribute to the vascular inpatients, day cases and out patients, with an appropriate level of consultant supervision according to your level of experience.
You will be expected to be able to undertake simple and routine general surgical procedures independently.
You will be expected to cover for absent colleagues and in exceptional unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off duty period or will be remunerated appropriately.
You will provide advice to clinicians in hospital and primary care, originating either from telephone calls or ward referrals.
You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.
You will be required to participate and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Health Board's policy and to undertake continuing medical education in line with recommendations for the Royal College of Surgeons.
Travel as necessary between hospitals/clinics is likely to be required to undertake duties and you will need to be able to travel in a timely manner between sites.
