Job summary
The Critical Care Practitioner Fellowship programme is an exciting opportunity for paramedics and nurses employed within NHS Wales. This development role will enable the successful candidate to work with the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS), Wales's exciting and innovative prehospital and transfer service for a 12-month period. Allowing them to gain valuable prehospital critical care experience and to improve their knowledge and skills in both the prehospital and transfer specialties.The Critical Care Practitioner Fellow (CCPF) is a voluntary role and will involve working approximately 24 shifts over the course of the year on both the road and air transport platforms. The programme is available at all of the EMRTS clinical bases - Caernarfon, Welshpool, Dafen and Cardiff.The service primarily operates on the Wales Air Ambulance Charity's fleet of EC-145 Helicopters, backed up by rapid response vehicles which provide operational and weather resilience. The service may also occasionally transport patients on Wales's 2 HM Coastguard helicopters when required.EMRTS is a consultant-led service and is committed to providing the best prehospital and transfer care to patients. Its operational clinical workforce consists of Doctors and Critical Care Practitioners.
Main duties of the job
The successful CCPFs will respond as part of the EMRTS critical care team to 999 emergencies, and inter-hospital transfers.
They will work as part of the team assessing and treating high acuity patients with critical illness or injury and will provide appropriate management within their own scope of practice ensuring patients are transferred rapidly and safely to the appropriate centre
The CCPF will also have the opportunity to undertake observer shifts within the ECCH, allowing the individual to gain a broader understanding of the tasking criteria for inter-hospital transfers, primary missions, and the ACCTS (Adult Critical Care Transfer Service) assets. An understanding of the SWTN automatic acceptance policy, disposition guide and trauma tools that are used by EMRTS and WAST clinicians in the Pre-Hospital and ECCH triage environment is essential

The selection process for this role is competitive and will consist of a portfolio review, an interview, and a fitness test. Written support from the applicants clinical line manager is required to ensure that they have the approval of their employer to undertake this role. Successful candidates will undergo a clinical induction to ensure that they are familiar with our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and all the EMRTS kit and equipment. This will ensure that they are able to respond to a range of incidents, which may include attending obstetric, paediatric and neonatal patients.
