Job summary

The Radiotherapy Physics Service at Singleton Hospital, Swansea is seeking a highly motivated Clinical Scientist to take up a Consultant Clinical Scientist post providing expert Scientific Leadership to develop the Service.

Radiotherapy Physics sits within the wider Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department and together with the Departments of Oncology and Radiotherapy, forms the South West Wales Cancer Centre, providing around 2500 patient treatments per year to a population of nearly 1 million people in the wider South West Wales region.

The service supports a range of state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment that includes four Elekta linear accelerators (including SGRT (C-Rad) and FFF capability); 2 Philips wide-bore CT-scanners; Pinnacle and Monaco treatment planning systems; and a well-developed oncology information management system (Mosaiq), all deployed in our own RTP-IT environment to provide access across the South-West Wales region.

The post holder will be expected to be a HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist; an experienced MPE registered with RPA2000 and registered or on a recognised path of registration (with demonstrated ability to obtain registration within 12 months of appointment) as a Consultant Clinical Scientist.

The role will include leading a significant area of Radiotherapy Physics. The area will be decided upon appointment, and consideration will be given to the candidates experience and interests as well as that of the department.

Main duties of the job

The role will include leading a significant area of Radiotherapy Physics. The role will include the acceptance testing of specific new or modified radiotherapy equipment, its commissioning, on-going quality control and for ensuring that radiotherapy equipment is calibrated correctly and is delivering the expected dose to patients. This includes responsibility for the scientific management of some clinical computer systems and software. The post holder will have responsibility for the management of an area and a number of staff, and has a role in advising on the specification and selection of radiotherapy equipment. There is a teaching commitment at postgraduate level, and the postholder participates in the training of scientific, technical and other staff groups. The post has a major research and development commitment linked to implementing the clinical capabilities of modern therapeutic equipment, accounting typically for more than 20% of the post.
