Join our dynamic and ambitious multidisiplinary team which includes 15 consultants, advanced non-medical nurse, orthoptic and optometric practitioners, ophthalmic technicians and ophthalmic health care assistants. This exciting opportunity is aimed at a band 5 or 6 ophthalmic nurse, orthoptist or optometrist who would like to develop into a specialist ophthalmic practitioner. The successful candidate would become part of our specialist non-medical team with opportunities to participate in our band 6 pre-assessment, RACE triage, corneal cross linking and intravitreal injection clinics.

Full theoretical and practical training and support will be given to the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

To work as a specialist ophthalmic practitioner in the fields of pre-assessment, acute eye care, medical retina and cornea. Our specialist practitioners have a very interesting and varied job role with sessions in each of the specialist clinics.

The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive pre-operative assessment to include history taking, consent, biometry, slit lamp examination and discharge planning, all focused on patient-centered clinical care. They will also accurately triage referrals into our acute eye care clinic, assist our advanced practitioners in corneal cross linking clinics and perform intravitreal injections for our Age Related Macular Degeneration Clinics.

The post is intended to provide improved outcomes for patients by improving timeliness and consistency of care whilst ensuring safe practice and compliance with clinical governance through use of policies and protocols.

Our specialist practitioners work closely with the non-medical service leads and the consultant ophthalmologists. They frequently attend training and specialist courses to maintain and develop skills and maintain evidence based practice.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
