Join us at Ty Garngoch as a Consultant Psychiatrist based within our Area 3, Swansea Community Mental Health Team. This is a great opportunity to make your mark and drive positive change, with support from a multidisciplinary management team who are strongly focussed on working to provide support, advice and education to the population within the Swansea area.

The mission of the team is to demonstrate Swansea Bay University Health Board's core values, providing input into the Mental Health of older people. The team provide assessment, diagnosis and management strategies in order to support individuals in relation to their mental health diagnosis, as well as providing the necessary support, advice and education to patient's, families and care partners.

Main duties of the job

You will have overall clinical responsibility for the management of referred individuals to services primarily by their GP as well as In-Patient services. This will be completed through support from mental health professionals for individuals to maintain and promote wellbeing, enabling individuals to continue to thrive within their community, and prevent unnecessary admission to hospitals, as far as is safe and practicable.

About us

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

Mental Health and learning Disabilities services are provided both in hospital settings (Cefn Coed Hospital, Tonna Hospital, Caswell clinic and Taith Newydd at Glanrhyd Bridgend) and other community settings.

We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals.

The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University. Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales.

The Health Board has strong academic links with Swansea University and Medical School and honorary appointments exist should you wish to explore this as part of your career development. The service strongly supports clinicians developing skills in other subspecialties and undertaking special interest sessions. There are a range of areas you can get involved in as we host a number of regional services including perinatal mental health services and regional medium secure services. You will have access to excellent CPD with our own medical education centre based on the Cefn Coed Hospital site in Swansea and a vibrant academic programme, plus access to a large peer group of enthusiastic and high-calibre consultants.

The Consultant Psychiatrist role is situated in Gorseinon, which is a short commute from Swansea city centre, Cardiff, West Wales, Neath, Port Talbot, Bridgend and surrounding areas.

To be successful in this role, you will:

Be medically qualified, MRC Psych or equivalent

Be innovative and imaginative with the ability to initiate service improvement

Have an excellent understanding of current developments in psychiatry and other aspects of mental health

Have substantial knowledge of change management, relevant legislation, contemporary issues in mental health, knowledge of and experience in purchaser/provider contractual issues
