The Midwifery Service at Swansea Bay has ambitious plans for its future. Under the direction of its Head of Midwifery, the service is progressing a transformation programme centred upon the development and opportunities for its maternity workforce, promoting service improvements through prevention, safety, learning and quality, improving women's choice and the personalisation of care. Located in the heart of the amazing coastline of Swansea Bay, the University Health Board is the main provider of elective and acute hospital services for the population of West Wales.

The University Health Board's catchment stretches from the fringes of the lush dramatic landscape of the Neath Valley and the stunningly beautiful Gower coast to the bustling University City of Swansea and surrounding areas. Main duties of the job

The Community Team Manager will be a dynamic, experienced midwife, with the energy and drive to support our forward thinking and talented Midwifery management team in the evolution of the service and to shape our long term strategic plans.

The Swansea Bay University Health Board Midwifery service is comprised of over 160 staff which supports women and new born babies across West Wales through Community Midwifery teams, dedicated Birth and Obstetric Units and Community based Clinics.

This is a hugely exciting time to be joining the Midwifery team; with a cohesive, quality focussed Senior Team, ambitious plans and a dedicated operational team hungry to make a difference; the role of Community Team Manager is at the heart of making these ambitions a reality for the service.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder is responsible for the effective leadership and management of a community midwifery team, and as part of a team of 8 community team managers, has shared operational management responsibility for the Freestanding Midwifery Unit (FMU) at Neath Port Talbot Hospital. They will monitor and maintain standards of professional practice, and will supervise, lead, direct and deploy the community team ensuring that standards of care are met.
  • The post holder will plan and implement universal midwifery care, and care in partnership with the multidisciplinary team where additional care needs are identified. This will be achieved through effective caseload management and co-ordination, meeting safeguarding responsibilities for women with psycho-social vulnerabilities. Working with multi-professional and multiagency teams to ensure safe standards of care.
  • To be an effective professional role model and advocate for women and midwives. The post holder will work as part of the senior midwifery team, contributing to the future development of community services through participation in quality improvement and development initiatives.
  • To be responsible for ensuring; person and family centred care, safeguarding of adults and children, service quality, monitoring the community midwifery workload, effective workforce planning and use of resources and modernisation.
  • The post holder will bring their team together around a shared vision in line with the Health Boards values and behaviour framework of caring for each other, working together and always improving.
  • The post holder will work with the Community Midwifery Matron to ensure that the community midwifery workload and workforce is fit for purpose and practice through implementation of education plans, clinical skills training and continuous practice development.

Maternity services in Swansea Bay are organised across Singleton and Neath Port Talbot hospitals, with dedicated Birth centres in both locations, a Labour ward at Singleton hospital and support from highly skilled Community teams supporting antenatal, community based intrapartum and postnatal care.

The Health Board currently finds itself in an exciting position, with the ambition to transform Maternity Services for the region, and is looking to appoint into newly developed Community Team Manager Roles who can develop and oversee the delivery of a range of measures building upon safety, choice and support for population we serve. As senior midwives within community services, the roles will provide professional and clinical leadership to their teams, demonstrating high levels of compassion, trust and support, to promote a democratic and collaborative leadership style.
