Job summary
The MSCC Co-ordinator will be responsible for operationally coordinating the care pathway for patients with spinal emergencies including impending metastatic spinal cord compression and metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) across the South Wales Spinal Network (SWSN) in accordance with SWSN MSCC guidelines. This is to include engagement work to develop necessary cross-provider and partnerships within network acute oncology and emergency care. The post holder will be part of a small team that provide coordination to support patients who present across South Wales including South Powys with suspected or confirmed Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression. Working across six Health Boards, within Wales and the Velindre NHS Trust serving a population of 2.5 million.
The post holder will be an expert point of contact for coordination of the MSCC pathway, triaging queries and ensuring the MSCC pathway is followed in a timely fashion regarding MSCC in South Wales. Responsibilities include supervision of junior MSCC staff, coordination of patients care in referral organisations (to include, acute trusts, hospices and primary care) and the organisation of the appropriate primary intervention delivery (including surgery, radiotherapy and SACT).

Main duties of the job
The post holder will undertake a clinical role in the on call/ acute oncology team in relation to patients with MSCC/spinal emergencies which will include giving advice to health professionals and patients in an area which requires specific clinical knowledge, skills and experience. Provide a point of reference and advice for clinical teams responsible for patients with spinal emergencies to include nerve root compression, impending MSCC and MSCC.
The post holder will work alongside other clinical colleagues in oncology, palliative care, acute medicine, radiology and pathology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised.
To be involved in delivering an effective patient experience for patients with a spinal emergency investigation and treatment, including clinical review and coordination.
Contribute to the effective support and delivery of the necessary audit and data requirements for patients on the MSCC pathway, working with the Clinical Lead, Information Team and network partner organisations where required. Ensuring audit data complete to determine whether HB/Trust KPIs are being met and acting on outcomes of data in terms of performance and change.
To work with Acute Oncology, Spinal and Cancer teams to educate AHPs/ Acute Oncology teams across the network regarding the management of patients with a spinal emergency.

This role will support six Health Boards, Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust and Velindre NHS Trust in the provision of metastatic spinal cord compression care to the population of the Network.
