The anaesthetics department are looking to recruit a permanent Specialty doctor to commence as soon as possible. The Post This is an exciting opportunity for dynamic and ambitious individuals wishing to follow a career in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. Working in the CSS directorate of Swansea Bay University Health Board also offers a unique opportunity for individuals wishing to achieve the CESR requirements as we offer a wide range of different anaesthetic specialties. Morriston Hospital Cardiac Centre undertakes over 700 adult cardiac and 350 Thoracic operations a year providing ample opportunity to become an independent practitioner in this subspecialty. The Cardiac Intensive care unit also provides care for high risk patients undergoing surgeries at Morriston Hospital as the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit temporarily is located on Cardiac Intensive care Unit. There are exciting opportunities for redevelopment of services at the Morriston site. The new centre for Thoracic surgery in South Wales will be developed at Morriston Hospital with ongoing plans for significant increase in thoracic surgery.
Main duties of the job
- Anaesthesia for all types of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. This will initially be under direct supervision, but as the experience and competence of the appointee increases this will be under extended supervision by a named consultant.
- Intensive care for adult Cardiac and thoracic patients. This is with particular emphasis on pharmacological and mechanical support of the cardiovascular system following cardiothoracic surgery.
- Trans-oesopahgeal echocardiography. The appointee is expected to acquire a working knowledge of the fundamentals of echocardiography during the tenure of the post. Further training for national and international accreditation in TOE will be encouraged.
- Thoracic Anaesthesia: There are 2 all day thoracic lists per week. It is anticipated that the appointee will acquire basic skills in fibre-optic bronchoscopy in adults during his/her tenure, Postoperative analgesia techniques, with special reference to thoracic surgery.
- Audit and research: Appointees to these posts are encouraged to undertake audit and research projects during the Post.
- Education: Specialist trainees are encouraged to participate in the teaching of medical students, nursing staff and less experienced trainees.
- It may be possible to arrange appropriate experience in other areas of anaesthesia to accommodate the training needs of the appointee.
