Job summary

Applicants are invited to join a team of the Department of Cellular Pathology at Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB), the biggest medical facility in Wales providing unique national subspecialist services in a range of disciplines, including centralised national pathology diagnostic facilities. The Directorate is composed of Departments of Cellular Pathology, Laboratory Medicine (Haematology and Chemical Pathology) and Immunology. Microbiology services, although an integral part of the Directorate, are provided and managed by Public Health Wales. The Directorate of Pathology is a Health Board wide service and part of the Singleton Service Delivery Unit.

The Department of Cellular Pathology incorporates Histopathology / Cytopathology laboratories at Morriston and Singleton Hospitals (both located in Swansea) serving primary and secondary care in Swansea, Bridgend and Neath, Port Talbot. In addition, it provides a regional diagnostic lymphoma service (part of the All-Wales Lymphoma Panel), South-Wales sarcoma diagnostic services and Her-2 testing to the hospitals in South-West Wales. The department is UKAS accredited under ISO 15189.

You must be fully registered with the GMC, be on the specialist register and have the Certificate of Completion of Training or be within 6 months of obtaining it by the date of the interview.

Consultants in the SBUHB benefit from a flexible approach to working practices including homeworking.

Main duties of the job

You will be joining a team of 19 consultants across SBUHB and undertake diagnostic surgical pathology and cytology, with autopsy being optional.

With the implementation of "A Regional Collaboration for Health" (ARCH), Swansea University, NHS and industry established a unique platform for rapid translational research to improve health of the population and set a UK wide example for quality of care and medical research. Under ARCH, the Health Board is set to transform Cellular Pathology to academically integrated Cellular-Molecular Pathology, technologically and conceptually fit for the genomic era and precision medicine. In this context, development of a specialist interest, teaching and research will all be essential components of the successful applicants' job plans. Continuous professional development will be actively supported.

You will be based in Swansea at one of the two Departmental sites, as per mutual agreement. As part of the ARCH project, Cellular Pathology services will be relocating in future to a new build at the Morriston Hospital campus.

You will be employed under the terms and conditions of the Welsh Consultants Contract.

Other duties are described in the Job Description.
