Job summary

We are looking for a Consultant Breast Surgeon (less than full time - 8 sessions) to join our team in Swansea Bay.

This post is based in Singleton but may involve clinical commitments on other hospital sites within the Health Board and there is the possibility to participate with the South West Wales Breast Test Wales screening service.

The Swansea Breast Care Unit is based at Singleton Hospital and serves the population of Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot and surrounding area with a catchment of 390, 000. The Breast Surgery team work collaboratively with the Plastic Surgery team providing a joint oncoplastic and breast reconstruction service in both outpatient and in-patient care. A full range of oncoplastic and reconstructive procedures including free flap surgery is offered to our patients.

The breast service is supported by a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) of in-house clinical and medical oncology, pathology, palliative care, radiology, primary, adjuvant and secondary cancer nurse specialists and research team.

The service is undergoing significant expansion in order to provide our population with the development of highly specialised breast diagnostic and surgical services hence we need to increase the size of the surgical team in order to sustain high quality evidence based clinical care.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care; allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff.

About us

We are research-driven, working in close partnership with Swansea University, its College of Medicine and the Institute of Life Sciences.

The Swansea Breast Care Unit is based at Singleton Hospital, and serves a population of approximately 450,000. A full complement of specialist and supportive services are provided, with surgical and non-surgical oncology teams based at the same site.

The breast care team in Singleton see and treat 400 new breast cancers per year, working closely with the South West Wales Breast Test Wales Screening Centre. The breast unit is separate to the main outpatient block and is therefore able to provide triple assessment diagnostic clinics, joint oncoplastic & reconstruction clinics with the plastic surgeons and family history risk reducing clinics. You will have a strong interest and background in breast cancer risk assessment and risk reducing surgery. The general surgical breast oncology team includes consists of three full-time consultants and one associate specialist working with a team of four plastic surgeons who have a specialist interest in breast reconstruction allowing for regular joint clinics and operating lists for more complex cases.
