Job summary

If successful, such a candidate would be recruited into the annex 21 training pathway with targeted objectives that would need to be met to progress to the substantive post.

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic HCPC registered Nuclear Medicine Clinical Scientist to apply for a Principal Clinical Scientist post based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea.

The Department of Nuclear Medicine at Singleton Hospital is part of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering service and has close academic links with the neighbouring Swansea University. It is a busy seafront department which offers a range of diagnostic investigations and radionuclide therapies. On site, we have two SPECT-CT scanning rooms (GE StarGuide and GE 870DR), a regional Radiopharmacy service, an inpatient radionuclide therapy room, a mobile PET-CT service (static PET-CT service anticipated 2024) and a bone densitometry service. The Clinical Scientist team provide scientific and Medical Physics Expert (MPE) support to both the Singleton Hospital site and to Radiology based Nuclear Medicine services within Swansea Bay, Hywel Dda and Cwm Taf University Health Boards.

The post-holder will provide NM MPE and scientific support and will take responsibility for specialist equipment management. They will take an active role in advancing research activities in Nuclear Medicine and will have the opportunity to lecture at MSc level. This is an exciting opportunity to take part and lead change in a fast developing setting, including optimising use of the GE Starguide SPECT-CT system, expansion of radionuclide therapy services and working towards a static PET-CT scanner installation.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will play a key role in service maintenance and development, will act as a Medical Physics Expert in Nuclear Medicine and will liaise closely with the Trust's Radiation Protection Adviser to ensure that work is carried out in accordance with National legislation and guidelines.

The post-holder will maintain a quality assurance program for Nuclear Medicine equipment and give radiation protection advice to both staff and patients with regard to Nuclear Medicine procedures. The post-holder will take responsibility for optimisation of image quality of diagnostic studies and authorise technical reports. The post-holder will implement new work practices, provide relevant staff training, coordinate and advance research and liaise with external research bodies and organisations.

The ability to travel between sites in a timely manner is essential.
