Job summary

A rare and very exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse to join the Integrated Surgical Services group in Morriston Hospital as Ward Manager for our new vascular surgery ward.

The new ward is brought about by the reconfiguration of our existing ward templates to create a dedicated specialist vascular ward. Currently vascular patients are cared for on other specialty wards and as such the vascular multi-disciplinary team are delighted with this new development and the opportunity it brings to improve patient care.

We are looking for an exceptional individual who is dynamic and enthusiastic to lead and develop this new ward team. We aim to provide a holistic approach to the care and rehabilitation of patients undergoing a range of vascular treatments and complex surgical procedures, which can include life altering surgery. Working within this specialty gives nurses the opportunity to develop a sound knowledge base in interventional radiology, emergency nursing care, diabetes management and pain management in addition to wound care, larvae therapy and negative pressure therapy systems. There will be a strong multi-disciplinary approach to patient care that will be driven by the team of Vascular Consultant Surgeons and Vascular Clinical Nurse Specialists. The ward team will work closely with ALAS (Artificial Limb and Appliance Service).

Main duties of the job

The Ward Manager is responsible for the delivery of excellent 24 hours nursing care. You will be responsible for the management and development of the nursing team. Experience of complex discharge planning is paramount; you will be expected to contribute to patient flow. Excellence in communication is essential and paramount to the development of good working relationships with the MDT. The ward encompasses the enhanced recovery after surgery ethos, an awareness is advantageous.

The role is both interesting and demanding as there will be both managerial and clinical demands.

The role requires you to implement clinical and non-clinical governance. You should be able to provide visible evidence that feedback is used to improve standards of care and clinical practice. An understanding of effective management of change is preferable, to facilitate the modernisation of patient services.

Whilst the majority of the time, you will be expected to work Monday to Friday, you will be required to work to cover the seven-day service in the event of staffing shortfalls. This might include evenings, weekends, bank holidays and nights. In return, you can expect support from the senior leadership team and clinical educators. The successful candidate will be supported to develop their leadership ability and managerial skills.
