Job summary

We are currently looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Psychologist to join The Welsh Centre for Cleft Lip and Palate, due to the current post holder successfully gaining a place on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

This post will support the Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist and the Cleft Psychology Team in delivering a psychosocial service in South Wales for people affected by cleft lip and palate. The psychology team work closely with the wider Cleft MDT to deliver psychological care under the national guidance from the Clinical Excellence Network for Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies. The role will be supported and supervised by a Clinical Psychologist.

Cleft Lip and Palate is the most common craniofacial anomaly which can be accompanied by a variety of physical and psychosocial problems and adjustments which present from birth into adulthood. These include feeding difficulties, coping with surgical intervention, speech and hearing difficulties, dental problems, abnormal bone growth, appearance - related distress, learning difficulties, teasing and bullying and familial tension.

The Cleft Lip and Palate service is based in Morriston, Swansea. Clinics are also held in Cardiff. The Assistant Psychologist will be required to work in both settings and be able to travel between Swansea and Cardiff in the course of the day.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Cleft Psychology Service in providing and developing a psychosocial service in South Wales for people of all ages (but especially birth to age 20) affected by cleft lip and palate.

The post holder will be a member of the multi-disciplinary team comprised of Cleft Surgeons, Specialist Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist Cleft Nurses, Orthodontists, ENT Surgeon, Paediatricians and Paediatric Dentists, all of whom are responsible for the delivery of cleft services.

The principal duties of the Assistant Psychologist will include collecting and inputting audit data from, setting up and maintaining databases, analysing data and contributing to research, audit, training, consultation and dissemination of psychosocial information. They will work according to plans agreed by the Consultant Clinical Psychologist and within the overall framework of team policies and procedures. In addition, under the supervision of the Consultant Clinical Psychologist and other members of the Cleft Psychology Service, the Assistant Psychologist will contribute to the provision of a clinical service for people with cleft lip and palate. This will include contributing to multi-disciplinary clinics as well as direct psychological interventions. Other work is likely to include developing care pathways, group work and and developing resources.
