Lead Vascular Scientist / Sonographer

Job summary

Act as the specialist for the Vascular lead speciality within CTMUHB, horizon scanning, working with Radiologists to identify, lead and evaluate the implementation of new / best practice. Achieve this through developing relationships with internal and external representatives and bodies.

Provide highly specialist advice on the Vascular Laboratory sub-specialty service to colleagues.

Develop the CTMUHB Vascular US service to ensure it complies with national and CTMUHB polices and strategies and current relevant legislation. This will include setting and auditing standards and agreeing and implementing standard operating procedures across CTMUHB. This activity will be overseen by the Clinical Director and Professional Head of Radiography.

The post holder will also have overall responsibility for the management of the Vascular US service Radiology CTMUHB. This will include managing the budget for that service, and delivery of local access and activity targets and local clinical governance.

The post holder will be a senior member of staff within Radiology and will contribute to the success of the US service as a whole, undertaking CTMUHB wide activities as and when required.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the leadership of the Vascular Ultrasound (US) service within Radiology CTMUHB.

The post holder will be responsible for the sonographer training across our 3 acute sites.

The post holder will ensure the service is safe, efficient, cost effective and meets the needs of the wider Health Board and the local population. This includes contributing to the achievement of all operational performance targets including governance standards, staff competence, access, activity and finance targets.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Responsible for providing the professional and expert lead within Radiology for the Vascular US specialty service. This will include being an expert resource, setting and auditing standards, clinical protocol development, liaison with Radiologists on appropriate issues and advising on best practice.

Build strong relationships with medical clinicians, clinical staff, managers and other individuals within the local area, CTMUHB and other organisations within Wales and the UK.

Provide managerial support in the absence of the Radiology Directorate Manager or Professional Head of Radiography.

Act as the link and coordinator within the US department and be the point of contact for all Radiology Vascular issues.

Be responsible for advising Radiology on the safe, efficient and effective delivery of designated Vascular speciality services. To achieve this, the Lead Vascular Scientist will liaise regularly with the ACoS Operations and Radiography, Radiology Managers, Clinical Directors, other Superintendent Radiographers and Radiologists.

Develop strategies for service development and delivery, informed by horizon scanning.

Develop initiatives for the designated Vascular Laboratory specialty service, contributing to them as required ensuring consistency with other parts of the CPG.

Participate in the development of the annual and 5 year IMTP Plans for the Radiology CPG, contributing as a senior manager.

Effectively delegate tasks or projects to senior staff within the Vascular US service.

Contribute to the preparation of business cases for the purchase of new and replacement equipment related to the imaging modality in line with Radiologys agreed priorities and capital replacement programme.

Lead the clinical evaluation process for equipment procurement, including the agreement of the specification and evaluation criteria and the full identification of risks, benefits and the financial implications of the proposals.

Identify and implement opportunities for service improvement and new ways of working throughout Radiology.

Work with the ACoS Radiography and Professional Head of Radiography to ensure that appropriate maintenance contracts for all equipment associated with the Vascular US service are in place and that maintenance and emergency visits are undertaken, ensuring that the impact on service delivery is kept to a minimum, records are maintained and supplier contractual obligations are met.

Make a full contribution to the success of the Radiology vascular US service through participation as required in the various CPG work streams- i.e. Workforce, Finance and Performance, Quality and Governance, Role Redesign and Training.

Provide effective leadership and motivation to staff within the speciality across the sites in Radiology CTMUHB.

Be responsible for the management of radiographic and multidisciplinary staff as allocated within the division.

Promote a culture of open communication underpinned by multi-disciplinary team participation.

Demonstrate effective use of evidence-based practice, evaluating emerging research and standards to inform service improvements and delivery.
