Porter Security

The closing date is 22 July 2025

Job summary

This post is fixed term/secondment for 12 months to meet the needs of the service.

An opportunity has arisen within the Porter Services department based at Prince Charles Hospital for one fixed term, full time Porter Security Officer. In this role the successful applicant will be expected to use a variety of equipment, communication devices, and software systems supplied by the Facilities department. This will include the use of PCs, telephones, radios, and pagers.

Training will be provided in all aspects of the job, and successful candidates will be expected to complete their vocational and mandatory training within the first two months of their employment.

In the event of a major incident or to support the department in adverse weather conditions, the successful applicant will be required to be called into work to support the hospital outside of normal working hours.

Ideally the successful candidates will be able to demonstrate previous experience of working in a hospital environment, or of having had similar roles outside of the NHS.

This organisation uses the Disclosure Barring Service system and will apply for an appropriate disclosure on all successful applicants.

English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply

Main duties of the job

The role covers the full range of hospital Porter duties and typically this will involve:

  • Security details including locking and unlocking departments.
  • Providing support and assurance to departments.
  • Managing hospital car parks, and issuing Parking Charge Notices as required.
  • Patient transfers.
  • The collection and delivery of specimens.
  • Medical gas cylinder delivery and collection.
  • Medical device transfers.
  • Waste management duties.
  • Postroom duties.
  • Driving duties.
  • Mortuary transfers

The above is representative of the expected duties, but the list is not meant to be exhaustive.

Welsh Skills Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This doesn't mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we'll consider it an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates. This isn't 'fluency', just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health.
