Fluoride Varnish Dental Nurse

Job summary

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and assist with the implementation of the Designed to Smile, Fluoride Varnish programme.

When required, to apply Fluoride Varnish in a community setting as part of the Designed to Smile programme/ WHC (2017) Number 23 Refocusing of the Designed to Smile child oral health improvement programme.

May be required to work in any Dental Clinic operated by the Health Board within the Community Dental Service.

Main duties of the job

To have individual responsibility for the organisation of the Fluoride Varnish programme. To ensure an effective and efficient service is provided, with offsite support and management by the Lead for Oral Health and Mobile services.

To participate when required in the application of fluoride varnish to identified groups in line with the evidenced based Designed to Smile programme/ WHC (2017) Number 23 Refocusing of the Designed to Smile child oral health improvement programme.

Communicate effectively with challenging or vulnerable patients e.g., those with learning difficulties, mental health problems and nervous patients.

Provide parents/carers with information and ensure they understand what treatment is required. Obtain their consent and co-operation in order for treatment to be carried out.

Provide Dental Nurse assistance, and patient management.

Monitor patients' needs throughout treatment, provide care to meet those needs and ensure safe precise delivery of care at all times.

To undertake UHB mandatory training requirements to include CPR/Emergency Drugs, Manual Handling, Child Protection, Violence and Aggression and Fire Training.

Carry out risk assessments on a daily basis involving safety requirements of vehicles, equipment, service users and staff.

Work to best possible practice when delivering care in non-clinical environments.
