Job summary
The post is a permanent Consultant post based in a dedicated Palliative Care Unit at Princess of Wales Hospital within Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, west of Cardiff. The post will involve care of patients across the geographical area served by the Princess of Wales Hospital and possibly extend further.
The post holder will be expected to take part in all aspects of a Consultant role and department including the training and management of junior staff. There are opportunities for further development.
There is redevelopment ongoing within the Department at present - there will be appropriate clinical input throughout.

Main duties of the job
This post is a consultant post responsible for the provision of Specialist Palliative Medicine services to the Specialist Palliative Care Team in the West of Cwm Taf Morgannwg HB (CTM), based at Y BwthynNewydd Specialist Palliative Care Unit in the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, and serving the population of Bridgend County Borough area.
The post holder will, in conjunction with the other consultants in the health board, be jointly responsible for provision of specialist palliative care across the whole Health Board. On occasions, this may requirethe post holder to provide cover for, or work in, other areas of the Health Board.

Clinical Duties
- The postholder will, with clinical colleagues (as appropriate), provide a service in the specialty to patients within Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, with responsibility for the diagnosis and treatment ofillness.
- The postholder will provide leadership in the field of Palliative Medicine and work with a multi professional team providing Specialist Palliative Care throughout Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB.
- The postholder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff.
- The postholder, in liaison with consultant colleagues will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the procedures, operational policy and strategic plans of the HB (as amended from time to time).
- The postholder will oversee the work of the specialty doctors in palliative medicine and support their continued professional development.
Teaching
- All consultants teach and train at postgraduate education and at undergraduate level. Strong links have been established with the Medical School at Cardiff University for the teaching ofundergraduate students.
- The successful candidate will participate in the departmental teaching / audit sessions.
- Y Bwthyn Newydd is an active training department with two rotational F1s, an F2, VTS trainee and Specialist Registrar. There are also two LTFT specialty doctors. The post holder will be expected toprovide clinical supervision and training to these doctors.
- The UHB has excellent postgraduate facilities at MPEC in the Princess of Wales Hospital, containing a lecture theatre, library, seminar rooms and videoconferencing facilities. The library offers full facilities.
Management
- The postholder will be required to co-operate with local management in the efficient running of services and will be expected to share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. In addition, it should be noted that a Care Group structure/clinical directorate structure is in operation, which requires close co-operation and liaison with colleagues as appropriate.
- There is a requirement to work within the financial and other constraints decided upon by the UHB. Additional expenses of any kind must not be committed without the approval of the appropriatemanager / budget holder
