Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an inspirational, dynamic and enthusiastic Clinical/Counselling Consultant Psychologist providing clinical leadership for the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB) Integrated Autism Service (IAS) Team. The Team are shortly moving to a new base at Ysbyty George Thomas in Treorchy but cover the whole of CTM Health Board.

The Integrated Autism Service (IAS) offers diagnostic assessment for adults and direct support for autistic adults and their parent/carers. The service also offers professional consultation, joint working, training, advice and support to all sectors who support autistic people.

The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner responsible for managing own workload in a manner that complies with NICE guidance principles, professional conduct standards and legislative requirements around neurodevelopmental services.

The postholder will provide clinical leadership to the Integrated Autism Service (IAS) and across Neurodiversity services, be responsible for establishing systems for monitoring the performance of IAS Services andensuring effective joint working and liaison with other services and agencies within the CTMUHB area.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will lead the service to ensure that the model has a psychological approach, is tightly managed, that strong boundaries are kept and supervision/Integrated team working is prioritised. They will lead on the assessments for entry to the Pathway, co-ordinate the work of the Integrated team and will be involved in managing the most complex and challenging cases.

Provide clinical, professional leadership and supervision for multi-disciplinary practitioners and support service developments across the IAS pathways:
  • Provision of appropriate screening and assessment of ASC, consisting of the use of NICE approved measures, individual and collaborative interview, and clinical observations, which offer recourse to multi disciplinary involvement or scrutiny
  • Interventions which reflect the difficulties autistic clients typically present with.
  • Offer opportunities for the development of ASC in clients, fellow professionals and broader society through the provision of post diagnostic groups, awareness training and further detailed packages of education. Also provide opportunities for the development of other practitioners through individual or group supervision or consultation.
  • Engage in appropriate co-production through service users forums, meetings and involvements.
  • Ensure that pathways are appropriately established and monitored for the success, appropriateness, and efficacy of interventions.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential

  • Honours Degree in Psychology or other HCPC/BPS recognised combined Honours Degree including Psychology.
  • Postgraduate Doctorate Degree in clinical or counselling psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996).
  • Eligible for Chartered status as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist (BPS).
  • Registered as Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC
  • Training and qualification in leadership.
  • Highly developed knowledge of the range of psychological models in their application to complex presenting problems.
  • Knowledge of cognitive and sensory impairment, delayed development, biopsychosocial models and the interaction of health and social care model to inform formulation of issues, assess and treat associated from a psychological perspective.
  • Specialist training in the assessment of people with Autistic Spectrum disorders, for example ADOS or DISCO.
  • Knowledge of government and national policies, national and local drivers, e.g. NSF, BPS guidance, to inform about re-structuring within the NHS and impact on delivery of care.
  • Awareness of own development needs, proactive in making recommendation for own CPD, and advising about other's CPD/training needs.

Desirable

  • Full understanding of issues related to Counselling/Clinical Psychology training.
  • Specialist training in Psychological therapy for example; CBT, DBT, MBT, EMDR, Systemic family therapy.
  • Record of conference presentations, peer reviewed publications.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant therapeutic expertise, and development of areas of expertise in a range of therapeutic approaches e.g. CBT, Systemic, Mindfulness based approaches.
  • Significant experience of teaching and training.
  • Experience of working with clients who may be unpredictable/violent.

  • Able to work with extremely distressing situations, e.g., clients that challenge services, clients with impaired communication skills.
  • Ability to develop or existing demonstrable clinical supervision and consultancy skills in a multi-disciplinary context liaising with partner agencies.

  • Competent interpersonal relating, involving complex emotional change at both the client and service/systems level: families, teams, groups.
