Job summary

The post holder will take responsibility for managing and administering Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board's legal services teams on behalf of the Head of Legal Services.

The post holder will provide team management, organising workloads and staffing to ensure the required standards and outcomes are achieved. In addition, they will also hold a caseload of legal cases of complex matters.

In addition to fostering relationships with all University Health Board staff as and when necessary, the post holder is required to support the Head of Legal Services in developing close partnership working arrangements with a wide variety of health related bodies or agencies.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

  • Manage the legal services team, including the efficient/effective management of legal affairs on behalf of the organisation.
  • Effectively manage a dedicated caseload of legal matters.
  • Undertake advocacy for the Health Board in line with competency and direction from the Head of Claims and Inquest.
  • Oversee the process for instruction of external legal advice ensuring effective representation, efficient use of resource and management of cost.
  • Discussion with staff (any level) regarding information received from outside experts which may be highly contentious and/or sensitive and to obtain co-operation and agreement from them to ensure the way forward is in the Health Board's best interests.
  • Ensure and aid communication by building and maintaining constructive relationships with senior managers within the Health Communities and HB.
  • Develop arrangements across the team for ensuring that the procedures for reclaiming monies from the WRP are complied with.
  • Ensure effective communication across the teams internally and with external bodies.
  • Support the development and delivery of robust policies, processes, and systems relating to Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence related Claims, and Inquests.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in law (CILEX Qualifications), or equivalent claims management, redress and inquest experience.
  • Expert in-depth professional knowledge of the legal system, and all legislation relating to matters of Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Claims and Inquests.
  • Knowledge and understanding of administrative procedures.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation packages.
  • Sound understanding of patient safety principles, quality management, and the operational management of the NHS.
  • Knowledge of tools and techniques to ensure process improvement, contributing to improve quality.
