Job summary
Working with the support of a team of registered children's nurses.
Provide a suitable environment for children to play, within the hospital setting i.e. the children's ward, Paediatric assessment unit and children's out-patient centre.
Provide specialist advice regarding play to the ward and multi-disciplinary teams.
Provide support to children aged 0-16 who are undergoing medical/surgical treatment and procedures, using play therapy and distraction techniques.
Main duties of the job
- To provide and initiate structured play opportunities for children aged 0-16 who are receiving hospital treatment, ensuring the care is age and developmentally appropriate.
- To provide play preparation and distraction for children undergoing a procedure which they may find distressing.
- To provide play which allows for normal growth and development.
- Ensure there are age appropriate toys and activities and be responsible for the cleaning as per UHB policy and maintenance of these toys.
- The ability to accurately assess a child's anxiety level and provide appropriate play opportunities to help alleviate anxiety.
- Create a child orientated, family centered environment where play occurs naturally at all times.
- Work within a team to maintain the child's link with family and home.
- Endeavour to support a child through the use of distraction and diversion therapy, e.g. playing, reading and talking when children are being held for sometimes distressing clinical procedures.
- Participate in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues including reporting and incidents.
- Plan and organise play activities for the day.
- Contribute to the development of other staff.
- Communicate effectively with children and their parents/carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication such as play and interaction.
- Understand that all aspects of work to be treated in a confidential manner
