Job summary
This post will join the team of consultants responsible for the provision of general surgical services to the University Health Board in Cwm Taf Morgannwg. The Locum consultant will be based at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, but may also be required to undertake sessions in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil and across other sites within the organisation.
The post will be required to share with Consultant colleagues in the responsibility of providing outpatient and inpatient services and ambulatory emergency surgery for the local population,
The post will also work with the Directorate Management team to: assist in the strategic planning and modernisation of general surgical services; deliver internal and external targets for patient activity and achieve financial balance.
On-call commitment to be discussed
The post has been created to provide benign upper GI service with emergency surgery. The successful applicant will be expected to cover a week on call as part of his emergency surgeon role and will be expected to provide Upper GI service during his non on call weeks as well as sessions in the newly opened Ambulatory Emergency Surgery Unit.
This post will involve travel between sites and travel time will be reflected in job plan.

Main duties of the job
- Provide professional and managerial supervision of junior medical staff
- Have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care: allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff; ensuring that concise, agreed management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex conditions; wards rounds are conducted to identify and assess problems and plan management of care; and be actively available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.
- Assist the multi-disciplinary team in the production of referenced, evidence based guidelines, which are dated, signed and reviewed at least bi-annually or more frequently in light of new evidence.
- Required to participate in the Health Board Risk Management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board.
- Revalidation will be required to maintain full GMC Registration and revalidation should follow the GMC code of Good Medical Practice.
- The post holder will be required to participate in the on call rota.
- The job will include the regular assessment and treatment of children who present as emergencies when the post holder is on-call, with general surgical conditions such as appendicitis. In this case, the post holder could have in-patient children admitted directly under his or her care.
