Applications are invited for a Consultant in Public Health to join the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Public Health Team. The Team forms part of The Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board working under the leadership of the Executive Director of Public Health. Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board covers the three counties of Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The Consultant in Public Health will be expected to deliver a major role working with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and other partners, ensuring public health influences delivery at a local level.

This post is Fixed Term/Locum until 31 May 2024 to meet the needs of the service.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Englishand/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

Although you will hold a specific portfolio of work, your responsibilities will likely cover all areas of Public Health professional practice, including:

  • Health Improvement,
  • Health Care Quality and Improvement,
  • Health Protection,
  • Health Intelligence,
  • Research and Development,
  • Contribute to population health advice to the Local Authorities of Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf,
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of partner organisations, including the Public Services Board.

Initial areas of focus will include:

  • Management and Professional Leadership for the Health Protection Service.
  • Leadership for Health Care Quality to address major chronic conditions resulting in inequalities of health outcomes and reduced healthy life expectancy for our population.

Further areas of work will be negotiated according to the needs of the department and the skills and knowledge of the successful candidate on appointment.

A detailed job plan will be drawn up with the Deputy Director of Public Health, upon appointment, drawing on the key tasks outlined in this Job Description.

The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Deputy Director of Public Health. The post holder will be professionally accountable to Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

  • Additional specialist training to Faculty membership/fellowship Doctoral level or Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List/UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists
  • High level of understanding of epidemiology and statistics, public health practice, health promotion, health economics and health care evaluation
  • Understanding of NHS Knowledge of methods of developing clinical quality assurance, quality improvement and evidence based clinical and/or public health practice Understanding of social and political environment
