THIS POST IS FIXED TERM FOR UPTO 6 MONTHS DUE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE
This post is a Consultant post responsible for the provision of Specialist Palliative Medicine services to the specialist palliative care team in the north of Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB (CTM), based at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon (Mountain Ash) and Prince Charles Hospital (Merthyr Tydfil), and serving the populations of Merthyr and Cynon Valleys.
The post holder will, in conjunction with the other Consultants in the health board, be jointly responsible for provision of specialist palliative care across the whole health board. On occasions, this may require the post holder to provide cover for, or work in, other areas of the health board.
The specialist palliative care services in Cwm Taff Morgannwg UHB are all managed and funded by the NHS.

Main duties of the job
INPATIENT UNIT (SPC IPU)
8 inpatient beds by a consultant-led multidisciplinary team. Patients admitted directly to the inpatient for home, or transferred from another site for ongoing care on the unit .
Inpatient care is one of the responsibilities of this post-holder supported by two part time specialty doctors (1.2 WTE) and another part time Consultant in Palliative Medicine . The consultant with inpatient unit responsibilities is expected to see these patients at least twice weekly and where appropriate see patients' families.
The palliative medicine specialty doctor's primary responsibility is the care of inpatients, the post holder and the other part time consultant in palliative medicine provide direct cover (acting down) for absence or leave of the specialty doctors.
COMMUNITY PALLIATIVE CARE TEAM (CPCT):
A multidisciplinary team consisting of four WTE Macmillan clinical nurse specialists (band 7), with input from the team's doctors, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, dietician. The clinical nurse specialists and medical team visit patients at home or review them as outpatients according to need.
OUTPATIENT FACILITIES:
There are two consultant outpatient clinics per week. The post holder does one clinic per week at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, with the third week of the month being a joint MND (Motor Neurone Disease) clinic jointly with a consultant neurologist and multidisciplinary team at Keir Hardie Health Park (Merthyr Tydfil)

- required to participate in the UHB risk management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department and the UHB.
- provide specialist palliative care advice to all LHB clinical staff
- participate in the regional (Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Healthboard, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and the south of Powys Teaching Health Board) specialist on-call rota for palliative medicine
Teaching
- responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to and participating in postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
- participate in and promote teaching and training programmes in Palliative Care within the team and throughout the UHB.
Management
- required to co-operate with local management in the efficient running of services .
- maintain their Continual Professional Development (CPD) undertaking any appropriate training and will be supported to do so. The health board supports the requirements for continuing professional development and is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities.
