Job summary

Are you an enthusiastic support worker with experience of working with adults with communication and swallowing difficulties? Due to staff restructuring we are able to offer this much needed role to enhance the skill mix at our skilled and dynamic team at the Princess of Wales Hospital.

Main duties of the job

At POWH, we have a busy inpatient, stroke, outpatient and head and neck cancer service. Your role will be to predominantly support the inpatient stroke and general medical service. Working in the hospital environment, this job will be fast paced and highly rewarding. Good team work, professionalism and organisational skills are a must for this role.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg SLT team are a kind and compassionate team, acting as ambassadors for people who are present with communication, eating and drinking difficulties.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To assist and support qualified speech and language therapists in providing a high quality speech and language therapy service to meet the health care needs of the local population and the service plans of the Health Board.
  • To treat clients according to set treatment protocols, monitor a clients response to therapy and judge when to discuss a clients therapy with a qualified speech and language therapist in order for adjustments to be made to a treatment programme.
  • To treat all clients and colleagues with dignity and respect.
  • To actively listen to the feedback of clients and colleagues.
  • To embed team work into all aspects of ones role.
  • To assist qualified speech and language therapists in the implementation of group therapy sessions and carer advice sessions.
  • To contribute to administrative duties relating to the planning and organisation inpatient sessions.
  • To monitor and prepare clinical resources.
  • To be responsible for the location, maintenance and cleaning of speech and language therapy equipment according to departmental and Health Board policies.
  • To comply with professional standards and clinical guidelines.
  • To have responsibility for assisting in the clinical management of adults not always under the direct supervision of a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • To implement treatment programmes independent of the therapist according to an agreed plan set by the therapist, in individual or group settings.

  • To carry out mealtime observations, reporting any swallowing difficulties noted to the speech and language therapist and to assist patients who have difficulty swallowing and or feeding themselves during mealtimes.
