Job summary
This is a new post, which is being created to develop and improve the stroke services in Prince Charles Hospital, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.
The Acute Stroke Unit (ASU) in Prince Charles Hospital is a 24 bedded unit, with 4 hyperacute beds and receives 600 stroke patients per year. There is a full stroke MDT who work closely together for the best of their patients, including an Early Supported Discharge team, Community neurorehabilitation, and video fluoroscopy There is a 24/7 Stroke Consultant led thrombolysis, access to thrombectomy via Southmead Hospital in Bristol, daily TIA clinics, neuroradiology meetings, and MDT teaching. The ASU has a full complement of junior doctors including two foundation doctors, two CMTs, two trust grade doctors and a COTE Specialist Trainee.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will help provide a service within the speciality of stroke medicine to Prince Charles Hospital, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness in Stroke Medicine.
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with Consultant colleagues will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the Department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan of the Health Board.
The post holder will be expected to participate in a 1 in 6 stroke thrombolysis and thrombectomy on call covering the acute stroke sites in CTMUHB. This on call is done remotely and IT equipment will be provided. This is a new on call rota, and we anticipate 10 to 20 calls per week, this will be reviewed in 3 months, in anticipation of Southmead Hospital offering thrombectomy 24/7.
The post holder will have the opportunity to act as educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff assigned to them, thus overseeing their training and being the initial source of advice for doctors regarding their careers.

About us
Cwm Taf Health Board was formally established on 1 April 2009 and combined the former North Glamorgan and Pontypridd & Rhondda and Cwm Taf NHS Trust, Rhondda Cynon Taff Local Health Board and Merthyr Local Health Board. It became a University Health Board in 2013. From 1st of April 2019, Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend which was previously a part of neighbouring ABM UHB (Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board) merged into Cwm Taf UHB. The Health Board following these changes to the boundaries is now known as Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTM UHB).

Essential
- oOn the specialist register for GIM and either COTE or Stroke Medicine oOR be within 6 months of the anticipated CCT / CESR date if progress has been satisfactory and it is anticipated that the outcome of the final ARCP will recommend that training will be completed by the time the recommend CCT / CESR date is reached; oOR have a primary medical qualification and recognised specialist qualification from an EEA country or Switzerland which will allow directed entry onto the Specialist Register. Prior to taking up the post the candidate must be on the Specialist Register.
