Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join Hywel Dda University Health Board as the next Head of Midwifery, Gynaecology and Sexual Health Services, within the Children's, Women and Families Clinical Care Group. The Head of Midwifery will be directly accountable to the Director of Midwifery Professional Governance Lead, supporting the strategic progress and direction of the services whilst having operational control.

The Head of Midwifery is a key leadership role providing operational and professional direction for midwifery, maternity services, gynaecology, and sexual health services across HDUHB, in line with national and legislative requirements and standards.

Be responsible for the professional standards of care and practice for Midwives/Nurses and associated staff (e.g. Health Care Support Workers) within Maternity, Gynaecology and Sexual Health services.

Ensure that there are systems in place for revalidation and performance management.

Be accountable for quality and safety in the Nursing & Midwifery structures of Maternity, Gynaecology and Sexual Health services.

Provide leadership, strategic direction, and professional support to staff within the services.

Directly line manage and provide support to the Senior Nurse/Midwifery Managers across the Clinical Care Group.

We are a multi-site HB with 2 obstetric lead units and a stand-alone midwifery unit with multiple community midwifery teams, and multiple site gynaecology and sexual health services.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work with the Director of Midwifery, Professional Governance Lead, General Manager, Senior Clinicians, and multi-disciplinary team colleagues in developing high quality, safe, effective and efficient integrated service for Midwifery, Women and sexual health.

Provide leadership in delivery of service and corporate objectives.

The post-holder will enable effective delivery integrated services which reflect local community needs and a streamlined approach to care that is equitable and accessible.As a key member of the Children Women and Family Clinical Care Group they will participate in long term strategic planning for services provision to ensure they fit within the overall Health Board transformational plans and meet the needs of the local population.

Summarise documents and analyse data from a range of sources to develop options and risks and opportunities to develop the service.Be responsible for policy implementation and development for the service, and as part of the Children, Women's and Family Health Clinical Care Group participate in long term service planning and strategy development.

To support the Site Management Team ensuring that effective patient flow, discharge and transfer of care processes are maintained.

  • Registered Midwife Level 1 (Active NMC registration)
  • Master's level qualification or evidence of continuous management development to master's level and commitment to undertake the relevant master's level study
  • Extensive knowledge of the maternity services with evidence of holding senior Midwifery management posts within an NHS organisation
  • Knowledge and understanding of current policy and issues in professional practice, compliance, standards and the wider NHS
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of achieving the professional regulatory requirements as set out by the NMC
