Job summary

We are currently looking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to fill a full time Band 2 post within the Cellular Pathology Department at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen. The successful candidate will work as part of a team providing cellular pathology services for the region.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a wide range of duties appropriate to the post and job description and will include data entry into the laboratory computer system, handling and processing samples. Training will be provided upon commencement.

This will provide an interesting job for the successful candidate in all aspects of laboratory work.

Main duties of the job

Main duties include:

To plan own daily workload and carry out the tasks and instructions of senior staff in a manner conducive to the provision and development of an efficient and effective Cellular Pathology service.

To receive and evaluate specimens to ensure that they meet the quality standards of identification and preservation as defined in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

To deal with quality issues, for example unlabelled specimens by informing senior staff.

To receive specimens, verify patient personal and clinical details, label, and undertake data entry on to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

To prepare specimens for dissection and processing.

To identify and prioritise USC and Urgent specimens.

To file and retrieve diagnostic and research specimen blocks, microscope test slides, reports and request cards for general use and for multidisciplinary meetings.

To assist BMS staff in the preparation of fetal remains for transfer to the local Crematorium.

To dispose of tissue samples under the supervision of BMS staff.

The successful candidate will have good communication , time management skills. They will have the ability to work accurately and reliably under pressure, with good manual dexterity and keyboard skills.
