Job summary

You will be responsible for the provision and coordination of high-quality midwifery care within the Powys Continuity of Care model, across the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period, within the Ystradgynlais and Brecon Team and will also work in partnership with other Midwifery Team Leads across the county to promote excellence in care over a 24 hour, 7 day per week continuum.

Main duties of the job

Provide management and leadership to midwifery and support staff and the clinical area to ensure smooth running of the service. Provide a full range of health, education and social care and advice to women and families within an integrated model of care, encompassing preconception, and the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, in a range of environments. Act as a mentor for preceptorship midwives, student midwives and new staff. Provide leadership and expert clinical midwifery advice when acting as Operational Team Lead (OTL) across Powys Midwifery service. Work autonomously within departmental, Health Board and national guidelines and sphere of professional practice.

  • Competent in venepuncture
  • Perineal Suturing - able to suture without supervision

  • Able to attend birth centre/home as first midwife without supervision
  • Able to support use of birthing pool in both home and birth centre setting
  • Able to promote, assess and deliver alternative methods to normalise care both in the antenatal and intrapartum period
  • Able to interpret fetal heart using pinnard/sonicaid, identify deviations from the normal and call for/plan appropriate help
  • Competent to lead in maternal and neonatal resuscitation
  • Able to discuss and provide information on antenatal screening tests offered, plan care with woman after an abnormal result
  • Able to discuss and practically apply UNICEF baby friendly initative principles
  • Research, audit and evaluation skills to ensure a high-quality service
