Powys Teaching Health Board are looking to recruit a motivated, dynamic and experienced Consultant Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to provide leadership and management to the Adult Psychology and Psychological Therapy. This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative and progressive service during a time of transformation.
The role will include: leading and managing an adult psychology and psychological therapy service and/or leading a specialist intervention pathway within the service; providing specialist psychological assessment and formulation of complex clients, carrying a specialist clinical caseload; supervising, line managing and overseeing the professional development of other psychologists, CAAPs and other psychological professionals; providing specialist psychological advice and consultation; delegated responsibility for clinical governance and quality improvement with the service; undertaking/leading on service development and improvement activities, audit, and R&D; and assessing need, designing and overseeing the delivery of skills teaching and training.
We are particularly interested to hear from candidates with additional training and qualifications in Systemic Family Therapy, EMDR, Cognitive Analytic Therapy, and/or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and with experience and qualifications in Leadership and Management of psychological services across tiers of complexity and need.
Main duties of the job
The Consultant Psychologist will play a key role in the day-to-day management and leadership of services, including:
Contributing to the long-term strategic planning, development, delivery, leadership and management of a cohesive, high quality and highly specialist psychological service, comprising intervention tiers and psychological intervention pathways including:
- A specialist Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Pathway
- A Systemic Family Therapy Pathway
- A Complex Emotional Needs (CEN) Pathway
- A Traumatic Stress Pathway
- Acute Pathway
Providing expert and highly specialist interventions and highly specialist supervision and consultation to multidisciplinary staff within the service.
Advise and offer consultation to PTHB and other relevant bodies (e.g., the Welsh Government) regarding psychology services in Powys THB and policy development.
Act as a highly specialist consultant to the wider mental health service in Powys.
Work autonomously within professional guidelines and will be accountable for their professional actions.
Responsible for service development to ensure the systematic governance of psychological practice within the service
Delegated responsibility for clinical leadership of the service including a service management role as appropriate, and line management of practitioners, assistants, trainees, CAAPs, students from own and/or other professions.

- Honours degree in Psychology with eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) with the BPS
- Post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical/Counselling Psychology accredited by the HCPC (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 as accredited by the BPS)
- HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist
- Evidence of significant postqualification continuing professional development as recommended by the HCPC and BPS
- Well-developed highly specialised knowledge of the theory and practice of psychological models and therapies/interventions in adult mental health
- Ability to plan a clinical service and to formulate a long-term strategic plan which may involve uncertainty
- Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
- Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the service
- Up-to-date knowledge of NHS management, service development and policy implementation in Wales-wide services
- Well-developed knowledge of leadership and/or operational management as demonstrated through post-graduate training and/or equivalent work experience
- Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice
