Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board

Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine with PHEM

The closing date is 14 April 2026

Job summary

Are you ready to take the most rewarding year out of training you'll ever experience? Bangor ED's Clinical Fellow programme is widely regarded as the original -- and still the best -- option for clinicians seeking high-quality rural EM experience, exceptional development time, and unparalleled exposure to pre-hospital and remote medicine. Based in a stunning corner of the UK, with Snowdon, Anglesey, and Eryri National Park on your doorstep, this role offers a unique blend of challenging clinical work, structured development, and outdoor adventure. These posts provide the full experience of rural Emergency Medicine with a remarkable bonus.

Our PHEM posts are designed as an ideal stepping stone into PHEM subspecialty training. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Undertake supervised shifts with Welsh Ambulance Services and EMRTS Cymru, the Welsh HEMS service (up to 50% of your PHEM time)
  • Work closely with Search and Rescue and Mountain Rescue teams
  • Gain first-hand exposure to SAR medicine in the mountains of Snowdonia/Eryri

This is an unparalleled environment for developing confidence, adaptability, and pre-hospital decision-making.

Main duties of the job

Primarily consists of shifts with Welsh Ambulance (on ambulances and rapid response vehicles) and - if you want to go flying - with EMRTS on board the Welsh Air Ambulance. We can provide unique insights into the work of our local SAR colleagues (Mountain Rescue/SAR helicopters) via the close working relationship with these services.

PHEM posts are for 12 months and must start in August. The posts includes your choice of funded pre-hospital course (usually IBTPHEM but could be PHTLS or ATACC) in PHEM time, in addition to the standard 10 days of study leave per year.

Unlike most PHEM opportunities, we do take pre-hospital beginners and our PHEM Fellows are encouraged to sit the DipIMC as soon as they have gained sufficient PHEM experience to become eligible. The posts are designed as 'prep school for PHEM', and to equip post-holders with as many of the 'essential' and 'desirable' attributes required by the PHEM sub-specialty Person Specification as possible, as well as gaining a wider appreciation of the ambulance service. Most importantly, we ask our paramedic colleagues to train our Fellows to become the kind of doctors they welcome at scene.
