Job summary

The Emergency Department (ED) was purpose built in 2014 and offers state of-the-art facilities. This was part of a new development at YGC called the Emergency Quadrant (EQ) which brings all Emergency and Acute Services together. The EQ houses the ED, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), a 24 bed Acute Medical Unit, Surgical Assessment Unit, Radiology services, and a co-located Primary Care facility.

The ED sees a full case mix of undifferentiated emergencies encompassing all specialties including Major Trauma, Stroke, Cardiac, Vascular, ENT, Ophthalmology, Max Fax and Paediatrics.

The Department has also been undergoing a process of implementation of modern models of Emergency Care including streaming, ambulatory majors, and rapid assessment. The ED is also keen to explore a 'Physician Response Vehicle" or PRV model providing a mixed EM and ambulance service response to selected cases in which alternative pathways avoiding hospital admission may be to the patients benefit.

There are opportunities available to contribute via competitive appointment to the Welsh Air Ambulance Emergency and Retrieval Service (EMRTS).

Main duties of the job

  • Support the Nurse in Charge (NIC) to manage Emergency Department (ED) risk escalating ED capacity and safety concerns.
  • Being a point of clinical contact in ED for Senior Clinicians and Management.
  • Allocating staff to the ED areas and responding to demand by moving staff as needed, following up on any sickness / no-shows / late starts and ask for extra cover.
  • Using Symphony to proactively run the ED.
  • Focusing on patient safety risks, reviewing unwell patients, and seeing patients as needed.
  • Supporting the streaming of patients to Minor Injury Units (MIUs), Specialities or Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) where appropriate.
  • Anticipating and intervening with unexpected issues, e.g., health and safety risks.
  • Prescribing analgesia, signing off ECGs and blood gases as needed.
  • Undertake the role of Trauma Team Leader for Major Trauma.
  • Support the streaming service/ Rapid assessment and treatment service.
  • Assisting with triage and review of ambulance patients.
  • Assisting with selecting cases that can be streamed to SDEC.

  • Full GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
  • FRCEM
  • Valid ATLS, ALS, APLS or equivalent provider status

Desirable
