Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Pharmacy Technician to lead on both managerial and operational duties across all aspects of the main dispensary, pharmacy stores, and distribution services. The post holder will be responsible for supervising and developing pharmacy and medicines management staff, ensuring the effective deployment of pharmacy technicians and assistants to meet service standards and key performance indicators (KPIs).

This role requires a patient-focused team player who is committed to promoting pharmaceutical best practice and supporting the ongoing development and training of staff. The successful candidate will oversee the pharmacy procurement and stock control systems, bringing experience in hospital pharmacy procurement and people management to ensure efficient and safe service delivery.

As a key member of the Pharmacy and Medicines Management team, the post holder will contribute to service improvement initiatives, lead audits, manage risk, and support strategic planning. Strong leadership skills, innovation, and a proactive approach to service development are essential, along with the ability to mentor staff and uphold professional standards.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the supervision, development, and managementof pharmacy and medicines management staff within their designated area. Key responsibilities include:

Managerial Duties: Leading service improvement projects, managing performance, contributing to planning and policy development, and supporting workforce management.

Governance and Risk Management: Developing and reviewing SOPs, conducting risk assessments, investigating complaints and incidents, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, compliance with the Wholesale Dealer licence and Home Office Controlled Drugs licence.

Human Resources Management: Line managing staff, conducting appraisals, overseeing recruitment, managing attendance and performance, and supporting staff development and training.

Professional Responsibilities: Ensuring service delivery meets professional standards, mentoring staff, and maintaining personal professional development through revalidation.

Research and Development: Leading audits and service evaluations, analysing data, and implementing changes based on findings.

Financial and Information Management: Managing equipment procurement, supporting IT systems, producing statistical reports, and ensuring data confidentiality and compliance with GDPR.

General Duties: Participating in dispensary, stores and out-of-hours services, communicating with patients on sensitive issues, and acting as a reference point for staff queries.
