Critical Care Consultant with an interest in Anaesthetics

Job summary

The Critical Care Unit is currently a 12 bedded combined general Level 3 and Level 2 unit with mixed medical and surgical admissions. The HDU supports major surgical specialities including Upper GI, Colorectal and Urology. Nominally 5 beds are designated Level 3 and 7 Level 2, but these numbers are flexible depending upon demand. A full range of interventions are offered, including advanced respiratory support (other than ECMO), invasive cardiovascular monitoring and support and renal support (including Dialysis). There is good support from allied health professionalsincluding physiotherapy, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory and the nutrition supportteam. There is a daily visit by a Consultant Microbiologist who is also available for advice. MDT meetings are held twice per week to provide collaborative discussion on ongoing patient management.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time, post consisting of 10 PAs, of which, typically, 7 are for Direct Clinical Care plus 3 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). The post will have a primaryday time and on-call commitment to Critical Care with the remaining sessions for anaesthesia, or an alternative dual specialty by mutual agreement.

On call duties are allocated on the ITU Consultant rota on a 1:10 basis.Responsibilities include an evening non-resident second-on role followed by an overnight first on-call non-resident shift. This requires telephone advice or in attendance support for the ITU resident in dealing with critically ill patients and assessment of potential admissions where necessary. The ITU consultant is also involved in the resuscitation and stabilisation of critically ill children until arrival of the retrieval team.

The Wrexham Maelor Hospital, located on the outskirts of the Welsh town of Wrexham near the Welsh/English border, is a medium-sized District General Hospital serving a population of around 300,000. With 650 beds and 180 consultants, the hospital offers a wide range of specialties and subspecialties, excluding cardiac, neuro, and transplantation surgery. However, visiting consultants provide outpatient services for plastic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, and specialist paediatric services. The hospital is also the sub-regional centre for upper GI surgery, and oncological services are provided by visiting consultants from the North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. In addition, the Shooting Star Unit, established in 2004, specialises in general outpatient oncological treatments.
