Job summary

The post holder will work closely with the Blood Transfusion Service Manager to maintain and support the integrated implementation of all local, National and International regulatory and specialist transfusion guidelines and requirements. Effective quality and risk management, will be promoted by establishing and supporting a culture of continuous quality improvement within all aspects of clinical and laboratory Blood Transfusion Practice throughout Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB).

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will provide leadership and direction to all BCUHB staff (and any other staff that BCUHB holds a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with) involved in transfusion, whilst acting as a role model to ensure high standards of care are implemented and maintained

    With reference to national guidelines, develop and implement the health board transfusion policy and procedures, designed to improve the safety and effectiveness of the practice of blood transfusion medicine

    Design and deliver comprehensive training programmes throughout BCUHB to all levels of staff involved in transfusion

    Provide highly specialist advice on transfusion practice and procedures to nursing, medical and other staff involved in the transfusion process.

    Provide written and verbal reports regarding highly contentious incidents and investigations to the hospital transfusion committee and senior staff throughout the Health Board

    Will lead on the national audit programs for BCUHB and generate the outcome report for the Haematology Transfusion Committee and Clinical Governance Committee. This requires the post holder to display significant skills in the utilisation of IT packages such as Word, Excel and Power point.

    The post holder must comply with the requirements of the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (BSQR) and the Central Alerting System via the MHRA and produce a safe and effective blood transfusion system accordingly
