Job summary
The role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to support the delivery of high quality safe care to women and their babies. The MSW will be a competent individual, working as a member of the Midwifery team at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, following appropriate competency based training. The MSW will work within in/direct supervision of a registered Midwife but still be guided by the midwife's expertise, within the remit of their role. The MSW will work with women and their families in a group setting throughout the postnatal period.
The MSW will undertake a range of duties including: personal care of women and babies, providing information and advice on self-care, infant care and initiating breastfeeding, health promotion, clerical, educational and housekeeping duties to ensure the smooth of the Midwifery team.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The main duties that are involved in the role are categorised into the following areas:
- helping to care for mothers and babies.
- making routine observations on mother and babies (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate and oxygen saturations).
- updating records and other administration tasks.
- educating parents one-to-one or in groups.
- taking blood samples for testing.
- preparing equipment.
- promoting and support breastfeeding
- reporting issues to a Midwife
- ensuring clinical area is clean and tidy at all times.
