Job summary

Come and join us in Bangor for a fabulous twelve months' Emergency Medicine experience in a rural ED, with a fantastic reputation for junior doctor training.

This one year Emergency Medicine F3 post offers 30% personal development time devoted to medical education: teaching medical students and other staff in the Emergency Department and also leading medical student tutorials and simulation sessions in the hospital simulation suite. There is also the opportunity to study for a funded PGCert in Medical Education.

This post is identical in every way to our deanery training posts: there's protected teaching every Thursday afternoon within the ED, plus a variety of other junior doctor tutorials and teaching sessions. You will also have an educational supervisor to help you achieve your career aims.

We are happy to welcome doctors who wish to just have a taster of EM prior to doing something else, or those committed to a career in the specialty. Our team consists of 13 SHO-tier doctors (3 x F2, 2 x ACCS, 3 x GPST and 5 x Junior Clinical Fellows) plus an Academic F2; ten Clinical Fellows in EM/PHEM; 1 EM HST trainee; ten Consultants; and two Associate Specialists/Specialist Grade doctors. We also have a team of fantastic ENPs and ACPs.

Main duties of the job

These 12 month FY3+ posts combine Emergency Medicine with 30% Medical Education.

The clinical part of the post is an F3 (Junior Clinical Fellow) post which is identical to our educationally-approved F2/ST1 level posts.

The Medical Education component of the post includes teaching medical students in both the Emergency Department and in formal tutorial and simulation sessions in the Clinical Skills lab. When you are delivering teaching on the shop floor you will be totally supernumerary and so can work closely with the students. The majority of our students come from Cardiff and Swansea Medical Schools including medical students based at Bangor University. You will also have the opportunity to support the teaching of trainee ACPs undertaking their MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. You will be supported by the fantastic team in the undergraduate office led by the new Honorary Senior Lecturer.

The F3 post In Emergency Medicine and Medical Education offers:

  • A fully funded PGCert in Medical Education to further develop your medical education skills
  • Weekly ED departmental teaching in paid work time - four hours each week
  • An Educational Supervisor with an interest in Medical Education
  • Training in running simulation in our hospital simulation suite in the clinical skills lab
  • A one year full-time post
