Job summary

To work alongside a team of Nurse Practitioners to assist in the provision of urgent medical care within the speciality Ophthalmology within our Emergency Eye Care Area.

To assist in assessment and triage of ophthalmic casualties, carrying out urgent intervention should this be required.

Initiate through knowledge and experience and independently carry out ophthalmic test measures which may assist diagnosis.

To provide telephone triage advice over the phone to both patient and members of the wider multidisciplinary team. Being able to identify those patients who require face to face management via the appropriate medical professional.

Assessment and triage of Urgent Referrals received by Primary Care.

Main duties of the job

  1. Demonstrate critical thinking and reasoning skills, differentiate between normal, variations of normal and abnormal findings.
  2. Takes appropriate action, initiating investigations which may aid diagnosis. Example OCT, Visual Field, Colour Vision test etc
  3. Through telephone triage service, accept direct referrals from a variety of sources: General Practitioners, Optometrists, Advanced Practitioners as well as direct patient referrals
  4. Deliver advice to patients and members of the MDT in both primary and secondary care, providing guidance on ophthalmic conditions/ symptoms via the telephone.
  5. Communicate effectively with variety of individuals over telephone or virtually, anticipating barriers to communication and taking action to improve
  6. Ensure problems or concerns are reported to the senior Nurse practitioner working alongside that shift
  7. Justify clinical decisions about patient's health care, acting on clinical knowledge and judgement
  8. Responsible for general clinical duties of ophthalmic patients i.e., monitoring vital signs, visual Acuity testing, irrigation, etc
  9. To maintain accurate, contemporaneous records of all interventions
