THIS POST IS FOR A FIXED TERM OF 15 MONTHS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE SERVICE

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 In-patient Acute Pain Nurse within Central BCU (based in Glan Clwyd) to cover 15 months maternity leave. The post holder will provide expert care and knowledge to those in-patients requiring specialised pain management, carrying a bleep in order to provide phone advice to multidisciplinary staff as required. They will be expected to work collaboratively within a small friendly team of acute pain specialists including a consultant, lead CNS and pharmacists.

This post offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for the post holder to develop Continued Professional Development with support and training being provided by the lead Acute Pain CNS.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the Lead Acute Pain CNS in the delivery of expert skills and advice in relation to in-patient acute and chronic pain management. The role will entail the assessment of in-patient pain,providing evidence based, individualised care plans that are implemented and evaluated. Specialist advice will include the management of epidurals, nerve sheath catheters, PCA's or other pharmacological / nonpharmacological interventions incorporating those patients with complex needs eg. Post major surgery or trauma, substance misuse, liver or kidney failure.

The appointee will be expected to keep their own practice up to date and facilitate the education and development of a range of other staff including formal and informal teaching sessions. Accurate documentation is an essential element of the role with both written and electronic data entry required for both safety and audit purposes.

The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively not only within the pain service but as a multidisciplinary team member, maintaining effective lines of communication throughout the hospital.

The post holder will be expected to work independently within their scope of professional practice and will receive specialist training and support from the lead Acute Pain CNS. This position includes a clinical workload.

In conjunction with the lead clinical nurse for the in-patient pain service, provides a primary point of contact within the speciality for patients and health professionals. Evaluates results of interventions using accepted outcome criteria, revises the plan of care and initiates appropriate and timely consultation and/or referral with relevant services/agencies when appropriate. Establishes collaborative relationships within and across departments, hospitals, primary and secondary health to promote patient safety, continuity of care and clinical excellence. Supports the lead Acute Pain CNS in the provision of leadership in the interdisciplinary team through the development of collaborative practice or innovative partnerships: this may include patient conferences, multidisciplinary meetings and strategic planning of the service. Works with a broad range of hospital, community and professional groups to achieve positive outcomes for in-patients with acute or chronic pain. Is actively involved in professional activities such as research, scholarship and policy development at both a local and national level. Shares specialist knowledge and skills in formal and informal education activities and ensures that nurses are supported in their development of culturally safe practice. This would include information on pain assessment (such as pain tools, World Health Organisational Pain Ladder, influential factors) as well as the management of Epidurals, Nerve Sheath Catheters, PCAs, oral/IV/PR/SC/IM analgesia and non-pharmacological interventions (such as relaxation, distraction, pacing, TENS machines etc). Disseminates specialist knowledge at both a Local and National/International level. Acts as a resource person for patients and health professionals, provided both written and verbal information. Supports the lead Acute Pain CNS in collaborating with nurse educators (externally) and BCUHB Corporate Nurse Education team to identify staff training needs and to develop an educational plan to address those needs. Collaborates with Higher education providers to provide specialist education within acute pain. Acts as a Mentor/Supervisor/Assessor and assists in the orientation and preceptorship of new nurses and student nurses.
