Job summary
Applications are invited for this post based at the Wrexham Maelor District General Hospital. The appointee will make up a team of 5 Consultant Nephrologists contributing to a 1 in 5 renal on call rota. This post has arisen from plans to strengthen and improve our existing services and replace a colleague who has moved abroad. The post holder would be part of the team providing a comprehensive renal service with the exception of acute transplantation. The Renal Ward has 25 beds including a 4 bed high care area. Acute dialysis and plasma exchange can be provided on the ward. We are responsible for around 110 haemodialysis in 3 dialysis units and in the region of 35 home therapies patients and 190 transplant patients. As an ST training site with 2 ST trainees we are keen that the post holder be actively involved in training and there is an opportunity to take on the practical skills lead within the department. Candidates with specialty interests in dialysis access, transplantation, and maximal conservative management would be particularly welcomed.
Main duties of the job
- Deliver a consultant-led Nephrology service at Wrexham Maelor Hospital for the diagnosis and management of both outpatients and inpatients and maintenance renal replacement therapy patients
- Work within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and managers to further develop local Nephrology services, with a focus on improving in centre dialysis care. Other areas of specialty interest are welcomed and we would be keen to incorporate these in to a successful applicant's job plan.
- Take consultant responsibility for allocated inpatients, with support from a designated team of junior doctors based on the renal ward.
- Contribute to the teaching and training of junior doctors and medical students. Many consultants are Educational and Named Clinical Supervisors to junior doctors, and most consultants are offered honorary undergraduate clinical teacher status with Cardiff University.
- Partake in clinical governance meetings and processes. All consultants are expected to be involved in regular clinical audit and quality improvement projects within their multidisciplinary team. Participation in an open, no-blame culture with patient safety incident reporting, serious incident reviews and morbidity / mortality meetings is also expected.
