Job summary

The post holder will be responsible for providing psychiatric input into the care of people open to HMP Berwyn.

This is a post dedicated to the Mental Health needs of the prisoners in HMP Berwyn. BCUHB is responsible for meeting the health and wellbeing needs of the prison population. The prison will be a Category C training prison for sentenced adult and young adult men. There will be a resettlement function for prisoners from North Wales. The prison will also have a remand facility for 200 un-sentenced, adult and young adult men within the total capacity of 2,106. The prison will receive remand prisoners from courts within North Wales. An exercise has identified on average 107 remand prisoners in custody from the North Wales courts. These include adult males and young adult males (18+); this figure has remained static for some time and is not expected to change significantly in the near future. In order to accommodate the remand prisoners, the prison will be built to Category B security standards.

In terms of the provision of health and wellbeing services it is important to recognise that while the population of the prison is 2,106, there is a significant number of prisoners who will flow through the prison, either remands or transfers. Its estimated effect is such that the health needs are calculated upon a population of 2,964 prisoners.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide specialist psychiatric assessment, treatment and management for prisoners of all ages in HMP Berwyn. The post holder will be based within HMP Berwyn and will work closely with the consultant psychiatrists and the wider MDT.

The post holder working closely with the consultant psychiatrists may liaise with other hospitals in case of the need for admission.

The post holder will have access for advice from senior colleagues in Adult Psychiatry, Forensic and Older People Mental Health.

The post holder expected to carry out risk assessment for prisoners and complete the appropriate reports. The post holder is expected to be familiar with the Welsh Mental Health Measure and the Welsh Mental Health Act.
