Job summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our established and highly motivated Specialist Palliative Care Team at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. Based at the St David's Hospice Inpatient Unit in Newport, you will play a central role in delivering high-quality, person-centred care across our inpatient unit and within our wider community palliative care services.
The successful candidate will provide expert leadership within a multidisciplinary environment, including consultant ward rounds, inpatient MDTs, and community-based support to local specialist palliative care teams. You will share clinical governance of the inpatient unit, contribute to the education and supervision of junior and specialty doctors, and participate in a telephone advice on-call rota (post-induction). Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide specialist palliative medicine across ABUHB, delivering diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care while leading multidisciplinary palliative services. They will offer expert advice to clinical staff, support clinical governance, participate in audit, risk management, and research, and ensure services operate in line with Health Board policies. Duties include supervising junior staff, contributing to training and education, undertaking domiciliary consultations, and providing cover for consultant colleagues as needed.
The role requires adherence to professional standards, NICE guidance, and Health Board procedures, with active involvement in managing incidents, complaints, and organisational learning. The post holder will support patient experience and safety initiatives, including contributing to patient safety campaigns.
They are expected to maintain professional development through appraisal, revalidation, CME, and use of the MARS system. Management responsibilities include contributing to service planning, attending relevant meetings, and working within financial frameworks.
All staff must maintain clinical competence, confidentiality, and a duty of care, while supporting their own development and that of colleagues.
