Job summary

We are seeking a confident, dynamic Violence Prevention & Reduction (VPR) Manager to help drive a positive safety culture and ensure our staff feel supported, safe, and secure at work. As a subject matter the post holder will support with the implementation of our Health Board Violence Prevention & Reduction Strategy and be involved in national work, delivering the requirements of the Obligatory Responses to Violence in Healthcare directive. The person will be responsible for developing and maintaining policies in line with legislation.

This role will ensure suitable and sufficient risk assessments are undertaken and recorded whilst acting as a key point of contact for staff providing them with expert, specialist support, displaying a consistent, compassionate responses to all incidents. Working closely with internal teams and external multi-agency partners, the post holder will work to improve incident management, reduce risk across all areas of the health board, and support the delivery of a safer environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have the operational responsibility and support the Deputy Head of Violence Prevention & Reduction with the day-to-day needs of the service. This will include managing projects in line with the Health Board Violence Prevention Strategy as well as co- ordinating and conducting violence and aggression incidents within the workplace supporting the Deputy Head of Violence Prevention & Reduction and the overall Health & Safety Team.

To be responsible for ensuring suitable and sufficient risk assessments are undertaken and recorded whilst acting as a keep point of contact for staff providing them with expert, specialist support in the subject matter. This will include promoting a proactive safety and positive culture across all areas of the organisation.

The post holder will develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures which will impact across the whole of the organisation. This includes compliance with legislation and statutory obligations.

The post holder will be required to work with all the Divisions within the Health Board and also engage with a range of statutory multi-agency partners and the Third Sector.

The postholder will have responsibility for the area of service delivery and will work on their own initiative and operate within broad policies and procedures.

To support on the development and implementation of complex and detailed planning, business continuity and violence reduction policies and plans across the Health Board.

To work in partnership with senior leaders and other key stakeholders to enable Violence Prevention and Reduction agendas and strategies.

To support initiatives to design out crime associated with a crowded place / soft target environment.

To provide expert advice and guidance to the Health Board on the delivery of the Violence Prevention & Reduction Strategy, using highly developed specialised knowledge.

To work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to clearly understand national, local and organisational drivers and violence reduction and prevention priorities.

To support with research within the specialism of violence prevention & reduction, implementing and guiding projects identified by the Anti-Violence Collaborative (AVC).

To support project teams in the development of new initiatives, projects and programmes to support the violence prevention & reduction within the Health Board.

To contribute to the programme of risk assessments for all areas within the framework of the Health Boards risk assessment process to identify strengths and weaknesses that could affect the safety of staff, patients and visitors, the protection of property and assets, and formulate action plans for improvement.

To liaise with service teams in the investigation of incidents relating to violence & aggression, develop and implement specialist action plans for dissemination of learning from incidents, supporting managers through this process, with the ability to prioritise and provide expert guidance and facilitation.

When needed to represent the Health Board at All Wales level in regard to Violence prevention & reduction.

To establish and maintain excellent working relationships with lead clinicians, and other clinical and non-clinical staff at all levels to encourage participation and confidence in ongoing collection, analysis and reporting of high-quality data in accordance with local and nationally agreed policies.

To provide specialised advice and post incident support to staff who have been a victim of a violent episode and act as a co-ordinator in terms of initiating a case conference for victims of assault and consider appropriate interventions, sanctions and controls. These incidents can be of a highly distressing nature.

To provide assistance to all staff members within the Health Board dealing with aggressive patients or relatives. High level communication skills are required as these cases can be very hostile.

To make judgements involving highly complex violent cases or situations which require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options, maintaining confidentiality as necessary and providing appropriate post incident support and advise.

Escalate serious incidents of violence to appropriate senior staff including preparing formal reports and documenting lessons learned.

Deliver, and evaluate violence prevention and reduction related education and training programmes.

The ability to analyse sensitive and confidential data, using departmental software, to create reports and initiate training priorities based on results of analysis, using persuasion and specialist expertise to influence negative areas.

To assist in developing and delivering on planning and provision of the training programme relating to violence prevention & reduction.

To be responsible for ordering equipment and supplies to support the delivery of education programmes when needed.

Authorised signatory for the approval of expenses within postholders team.

To provide specialist violence prevention & reduction training to staff within high-risk areas. This will require moderate physical effort.

To lead, direct and supervise the Violence Prevention & Reduction Advisor.
