Job summary
The Acute Medicine eam at GUH comprises 16 consultants and a team of 8 doctors (1 ST, 4 ACCS, 1 FD and 2 CF) supported by 4 Physician associates and a team of ANPs
The Acute Medicine team predominantly look after patients in the AMU, AMU 2 and ED with a Consultant led ward round from 08.00-12.00 each morning.
The standard working day is from 08.00 - 16.00
Weekly personal development time is allocated within the weekly working rota
The PTWR is done by 2 additional consultants and the on-call team supported by one of the Acute Medicine team and one of the physician associates or a rotating basis.
The role provides plenty of opportunities to develop competency in lumbar puncture, insertion of long lines, ascitic taps and drains, pleural experience can also be arranged.
Professional development of our medical staff is a priority for the Health Board and there is a well-developed teaching programme for medical staff which includes a weekly Grand Round, IMT and Acute Medicine teaching.
Learning from deaths and clinical incidents is also a priority to the Directorate with a monthly M&M meeting
The post holders will be encouraged to go through career development opportunities including MRCP examinations and to pursue clinical skills courses like IMPACT, ALS and Simulation course.
Main duties of the job
The main responsibilities of the post are effective and appropriate medical care of the Acute Medicine inpatients at The Grange University Hospital and or The Royal Gwent Hospital and participation in the Acute Medical take. The post holder will be part of a large medical and multidisciplinary team working under direct consultant supervision.
The post holder will alsobe required to provide prospective cover for colleagues during their Annual & Study Leave for on-calls and day time cover.
All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which are deemed competent. Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisations regarding supervision.
All qualified staff have a responsibility to supervise unqualified/more junior staff and students on a day-to-day basis to ensure that patients receive appropriate care and that any untoward action is addressed.
All leave arrangements must be co-ordinated with colleagues to ensure a minimum, safe and appropriate cover and agreed with the Directorate Manager and Clinical Director.
