Deputy Pre-Analytical Manager

Job summary

We are looking for an individual with excellent communication & interpersonal skills who is energetic, enthusiastic, and well-motivated to join the Blood sciences leadership team.

This is a new role to support the Pre-analytical Manager across ABUHB including the Grange University Hospital (GUH), Royal Gwent Hospital (RGH) and Nevill Hall Hospital (NHH). Along with the Pre-analytical Manager the successful candidate will be responsible for managing Phlebotomy & Specimen reception departments.

Pathology Phlebotomy currently covers all ward-based services at GUH, RGH & NHH as well as OPD at NHH. The Phlebotomy team comprises of two B4 supervisors and a team of B2 Phlebotomists who rotate between hospital sites.

The Blood Science reception is primarily responsible for the receipt of patient specimens predominately blood samples, from primary & secondary care across the ABUHB catchment. Once receipted these specimens are entered electronically into the Laboratory Information system before being passed into the Blood Science laboratory for diagnostic testing. The reception team covers GUH (hub site) & RGH and comprises of two B4 supervisors and a team of Health Care Support workers/Medical Laboratory assistants.

You will be based in Pathology at our hub in GUH but will be required to rotate across all sites as necessary.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide robust, conscientious leadership and have a sound knowledge of managing a busy department, HR and quality systems.

You will be expected to oversee the day-to-day planning and organisation of Blood Science Reception and the Phlebotomy Service motivating and managing staff, prioritising a busy workload and overseeing all daily operations.

You will have the support of the Pre-analytical manager, two Band 4 pre-analytical supervisors & two Band 4 Phlebotomy supervisors as well as the Blood Science department managers.

This is a band 5 position, the successful candidate will be educated to Degree level or have demonstrable equivalent knowledge and experience, such as a strong pathology/Phlebotomy, NHS experience, supervisory/management experience & a good understanding of quality management. A Trainee / Annex 21 Band 5 could be considered.

The post is a Part-time permanent role, covering 30.0 hours Mon-Fri, although occasional weekend/out of hours work may be required.

The department has full UKAS accreditation and supports career progression & staff development at all levels. Continuous professional development (CPD) is actively encouraged and supported.
