The Primary Care Dental Practice Advisor provides internal/professional advice and support to the Local Health Board in relation to NHS Primary Dental Care matters as well asadvice and leadership on the strategic development and implementation of wider Primary Care in Aneurin Bevan
The post holder will be required to provide clinical leadership; maximising connectivity and integration between Primary Care contractor services, the Dental Professional Collaboratives /NCNs and other work streams with the Dental Director for Primary Care and Community
Main duties of the job
The role will involve work interfacing with general dental practices along with the Health Boards Primary Care Contracting, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, the Public Health Wales Dental Public Health team, Welsh Government and Health Education and Improvement Wales.
The role provides clinical leadership and advice to ensure Primary Care Dental Services are developed and delivered in a manner that is safe and compassionate, of consistently high quality with mechanisms for continuous improvement
Advise the Head of Primary Care, Dental Director for Primary Care and Community and Divisional Director and help shape clinical strategy. By agreement, take a lead responsibility for dental service issues outside of the immediate role in order to contribute to the corporate objectives of the Health Board.
The DPA provides support and clinical advice on behalf of the Medical Director for all General Dental Council (GDC) registered staff independently contracted within the Health Board.
Providing 2 core sessions each week with flexibility for attendance at required meetings and practice visits. It may be necessary to work evenings and weekends to liaise fully with dental practices, although this should be the exception.
There will be a requirement to maintain involvement in the dental professional network of the PHW Dental Governance Team, through the Dental Quality and Patient Safety group and Integrated Oral Health Group

Essential
- oBachelor of Dental Surgery, BDS/BChD or equivalent
- oFull registration with the United Kingdom's General Dental Council (GDC) and inclusion on a Dental Performers List in Wales
- oEvidence of meeting General Dental Council Continuing Professional Development Requirements (including up-to-date CPD profile incorporating all core subjects)
- oKnowledge of UK Dental legislation and NHS GDS , representational, regulatory, educational and remuneration systems/arrangements
- oUnderstanding of the relevant statutory and strategic dental policy (Wales and UK)
- oAware of NHS primary dental care, dental contracting and professional standards in general
Desirable
- oMembership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (UK)
- oDiploma in General Dental Practice
- oAdditional postgraduate qualifications appropriate to primary dental care
