Job summary
The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Older Adult Psychology Service is looking for enthusiastic practitioner psychologists to join our existing team. We have two 0.8 wte Band 8a posts available in the borough of Caerphilly, although very happy to discuss full time roles.
Our current service consists of HCPC registered practitioner psychologists, arts therapists and assistant psychologists. We are committed to increasing access to psychological therapies for older adults and these posts are an important component of extending access to a range of therapeutic modalities.
The older adult psychology service provides a range of evidenced based psychological therapies within the geographical area of Gwent, South Wales. The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board serves the population of Gwent, South Wales and is located between Cardiff and Bristol. There are five boroughs, each with its own CMHT provision and comprising of secondary mental health services, memory assessment and liaison/inpatient support practitioners.
We enjoy close links with major universities and provide clinical training support to the South Wales Clinical Training Courses. As such, there are opportunities for career development in terms of research, training placements and teaching. Opportunities for supervision and peer support are available through the older adult psychology speciality and wider psychology network.
Main duties of the job
The post holders will undertake clinical work within the community mental health team, memory assessment service and inpatient wards in the borough of Caerphilly. This will involve specialist psychological assessment, formulation and intervention. In addition, the post holders will support the development of colleagues through supervision and consultation. Research and service development opportunities are available and we would seek to support the post holder to consolidate and extend specialist skills and interests.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
We will only accept applications from individuals who are currently registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist and who are able to demonstrate that they have the relevant post-graduate qualifications, NHS experience and supervised practice for the post advertised.

Clinical
- To effectively identify and prioritise appropriate referrals for clinical psychology services.
- To provide highly specialised psychological assessments based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observation and semi-structured interviews with clients, family member and others involved in the clients care.
- To formulate and implement plans for formal psychological treatment and/or management of a clients physical and associated psychological difficulties, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence, across the full range of care settings served by the CMHT.
- To be responsible for implementing a range of highly specialised psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
- To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
- To provide highly specialist psychological input to delivering integrated care pathways.
- To provide highly specialist psychological advice guidance and consultation to other health and social care professionals; contributing to client formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
- To communicate complex and sensitive information to clients, their relatives/carers, CMHT staff and referrers in a manner which displays respect for the individual and in language appropriate to the recipients needs.
- To work autonomously to apply relevant clinical, professional and ethical guidelines to the conduct of therapy, communication and practice (e.g., BPS/DCP Guidelines, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board guidelines, HCPC Guidelines). To utilise team protocols and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within specified clinical areas.
- To use analytic ability and judgement to integrate across the multiple perspectives which may be held in a CMHT on client and relatives needs and be able to challenge and change assumptions or misconceptions which may impact negatively on client care, rehabilitation outcomes or relationships within the team.
- To be responsible for all administrative tasks relating to case-work including keeping case notes, therapeutic correspondence, CTP documentation and process records, client data base records etc. in line with the Policies and Procedures of the Older Adult Directorate and the Gwent Psychology Service.
- To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide general advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management
- To be a Key Worker as decided in the CTP Meetings of the CMHT.
- To work autonomously to ensure safe and effective working practice in inpatient and outpatient settings where clients may require specialised equipment to support their interactions with a clinical psychologist.
- The clinical psychologist will be exposed to highly emotionally charged and/or distressing client and relative/carer disclosures. They must be professionally competent and maintain their highly specialist skills in accordance with Good Practice Guidelines
- To have delegated responsibility for ensuring the provision of psychological expertise, advice and support by the post holder and junior psychological service colleagues working in the team, or service area for which they have lead responsibility. To facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of psychological care by all members of the team or service area for which they have lead responsibility.
- To provide expertise and advice to facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of psychological care by all members of the team.

Teaching and Training
- To participate in regular clinical professional supervision from the Head of Older Adult Psychology, and where appropriate, other service professional colleagues, in line with professional guidelines.

- To supervise the psychological work of psychologists, staff from other disciplines, undergraduates in psychology and psychology assistants as appropriate.
- To provide highly specialised training for staff and carers on a variety of topics. This will require planning, organising and delivering of training for a wide-ranging audience, including CMHT colleagues, hospital staff, community and nursing home staff, and carers.
- To provide advice, consultation and clinical supervision to other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- To liaise with other staff and organisations in the provision of education related to psychological aspects of client care in respect of the mental health needs of older adults and their carers.
- To be responsible for providing as the main Clinical Supervisor, or organising core and/or elective placements for Trainee Clinical Psychologists within the Older Adult speciality of ABUHB.
- To be responsible for directly providing or organising relevant aspects of formal teaching for Trainee Clinical Psychologists on a Doctoral Course in Clinical Psychology, in agreement with the course Director and Tutors.

Research and Evaluation
- To take an active part in evaluation and audit as part of clinical governance and/or as directed by the Older Adult Directorate.

Administrative
- To work towards objectives set by the Head of Older Adult Psychology, Borough Senior Nurse and Older Adult Directorate Management Team.
- To be responsible for administrative tasks relating to case-work including keeping case notes and preparing written reports in line with the policies and procedures of the CMHT, Older Adult Directorate, Gwent Psychology Service, and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
- To be responsible for relevant data collection on work activities and service performance reports, as required, and to maintain a high standard of clinical and audit record keeping
- To manage their diary to ensure competent time management and completion of clinical work, research, professional development and attendance at meetings
- To participate fully in supporting the activities of psychological professions within the Health Board, including attending relevant meetings

Professional Development
- To partake regularly in activities related to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to the standards required for continued HCPC registration.
