Job summary

This post is 0.5WTE O and G and 0.5WTE SRH which provides the possibility of a varied role across secondary care and a community service.

We have a well-established group of Physician Associates within the Health Board covering Secondary Care. In addition to a clinical supervisor in shift, PA's in Obstetrics & Gynaecology will benefit from a identified supervisor responsible for the development and training of the PA team.

The successful candidate will join a cohesive multidisciplinary team (MDT) consisting of: Consultants, Junior Doctors, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Midwifes, Therapists, Physiotherapists, Dieticians and other Ward based teams with input from a variety of other key specialties. The Physician Associate will receive formal Supervision from a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and will join the team at the brand-new specialist acute site, the Grange University Hospital. The Grange is a new state-of-the-art Hospital which first opened its doors in November 2020.

The Sexual and Reproductive Health role will provide general training on management of sexually transmitted infections and contraception. Involvement in the follow up and management of victims of sexual assault of all ages and all genders will be an important part of the role. This will involve liaising with SARC for children and adults and supporting self referring patients. There are opportunities to expand your skill portfolio of procedures and specialist consultations.

Main duties of the job

This post will allow the Physician Associate to:

  • Train to assess patients within inpatient and outpatient settings and escalate to a senior where appropriate.
  • Learn to interpret specialist imaging and specialist techniques in obstetrics and gynaecology.
  • Utilise core skills such as: peripheral IV cannulation, ECG interpretation, examination of all body systems, venepuncture, interpretation of diagnostics and all of the ward based skills within the PA OSCE framework (catheterisation etc)
  • Work within a cohesive MDT team to understand and assist in service improvements across the pathway
  • Get involved with innovative projects within the field, leading on audits and quality improvement, particularly in the area of sexual assault follow up
  • Work closely with urgent care specialities and other key specialities to ensure the holistic care for our patients.
  • Join the consultant-led ward round, assisting with key interventions and the delivery of the management plans.
  • Learning to assist in surgery.
  • Caring for patient in post-operative care and recognising the signs of a deteriorating patient
  • Working within an outpatient setting once competent to assist with our performance targets
  • Supported to enrol on courses to further your skills and knowledge in this field.
