Job summary

This is a locum Consultant post based at the Grange University Hospital with office space for admin and outpatient clinics at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport. The appointee should have wide experience of General Cardiology and particular skill and expertise in coronary intervention to support the busy local PCI service and regional Primary PCI service.The Health Board's Cardiology service was recently centralised at the new Grange University Hospital (GUH) which opened last year. Ward work is supported by four SpRs, twelve other Junior Doctors, two Physicians Associates, and two Advanced Nurse Practitioners. In addition we have two Arrhythmia nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation nurses and a Consultant Nurse Specialist for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Heart Failure (Health Board lead role). The department also benefits from a Research Assistant whose role is to assist with clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

The Cardiology Department undertakes a full range of cardiac procedures a & investigations including transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echo, exercise testing, angiography, tilt testing, CT coronary angiography, nuclear cardiology, CMRI, permanent pacing, complex pacing, cardioversion, coronary angiography and PCI. Most patients with ST elevation MI are treated at the University Hospital of Wales as part of a regional PPCI service. There are 2 cardiac catheter laboratories, a pacing suite and a large Acute Cardiac Care Unit with a total of 42 cardiology beds. The Cardiologists have no commitment to General Internal Medicine but provide a 24/7 cardiology service with 7 day working.

There is no requirement for a CCT in General Medicine for this post. Cardiologists participate in a dedicated cardiology on-call rota for weekdays and weekends. A 'Cardiologist of the Week' service commenced in March 2013 operating on a 1 in 14 rota, covering the hours 9.00 to 5.00 pm. During week 1, the Cardiologist of the Week is responsible for all acute cardiac admissions via the Acute Cardiac Unit and Medical Assessment Unit. An average of 12 cardiology referrals/day and an in-patient load of up to 40 patients is expected, with a rapid turnover. Week 2 allows completion of the episode of care of most patients, with an associated reduction in workload.
