Parent Infant Mental Health Specialist.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced therapeutic practitioner to join our specialist service within the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. Practitioners such as Clinical/Educational Psychologists, Systemic Family therapists, Child Psychotherapists, Art, Drama and Music therapists are all welcome to apply.
The Gwent Parent Infant Mental Health Service (G-PIMHS) is an emerging and growing service that focuses on supporting the earliest parent-infant relationship, particularly around the early stages of bonding and attachment. We are a multi-disciplinary service that recognises the need at times for joint working and bespoke interventions.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a real passion and commitment to parent-infant working, to be able to understand and appreciate the complexities of this kind of work, including intergenerational aspects and the importance of this on the early emotional and social development of the child and implications for lifelong wellbeing.
Ideally, you will have a level of experience working in this area and be able to use initiative and imagination to help develop the service. You will be required to have good communication skills and an appreciation of systemic dynamics when working with very complex families. You will also have a good understanding of working with professional networks, building relationships multi-agency and be able to work autonomously at times.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will use specialist skills and knowledge to assess the needs of infants and their familieswhere there are emotional, developmental and mental health problems and formulate a treatmentintervention plan.
To provide, when appropriate both short and longer term therapeutic support to individual parents andto engage with any emotional, psychological and mental health difficulties within the parents that are likelyto impair the development of secure attachment between them and their child.
To offer therapeutic interventions designed to enhance the quality of the relationship between parent andinfant.
Provide a focus on the impact of developmental trauma, neglect and emotional harm (intergenerational)and develop evidence based therapeutic interventions.

The post holder will ensure the provision of evidence based therapeutic intervention for infants andchildren up to the age of 2, and their parents, and provide expertise and specialist therapeutic advice,guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients treatment plan. Otherprofessionals may seek post-holders opinion in areas of specialty. The post holder will need to be able to provide and receive highly complex information; they will needto be able to communicate extremely complicated strands of information which may be conflicting. Forexample, communicating about particularly complicated clinical matters to clients, their support workersand referrers. The post holder will need to be able to provide and receive highly contentious information where theremay be significant barriers to acceptance or understanding. For example, communicating with violentparent about the effects of his or her behaviour on the baby. The post holder will need to be able to communicate complex information in highly emotive atmospheresthat may be hostile and antagonistic towards the therapist which requires the use of the highest level ofinterpersonal and communication skills with caregivers who present with serious mental healthconcerns. The post holder will also be responsible to manage and deal with highly complex, sensitive informationsuch as disclosures and allegations of extreme sexual abuse and other serious offences. There may beexposure to highly distressing or highly emotional circumstances, for example dealing with disclosuresof sexual abuse and other serious offences such as perpetrating behaviours. The post holder will communicate verbally and in writing with clients from a diverse range ofbackgrounds (including ethnic, cultural developmental and intellectual abilities and mental healthdifficulties), and with carers/family members, colleagues within multi-disciplinary teams, workers fromother agencies, both statutory and voluntary organisations and anticipates difficulties in communicationwhich may impact on assessments and interventions. The post holder will establish and maintain effective working relationships with professionals inmultidisciplinary teams including in circumstances of conflict or disagreement on clinical opinions oradvice. Communicate with others considering their culture, preferred language, cognitive development,emotional stability. To provide comprehensive liaison and consultation to other agencies, in parallel with this role, Maintain strong links with borough service managers including local authority, perinatal team, adultmental health services, social care and CAMHS. The post holder will provide expert consultation to staff from other agencies, working with the sameclients, when appropriate. The post holder will be able to develop relationships and communicate effectively with several membersof a family, taking different positions as appropriate. Communication requires a high degree of empathy,cultural sensitivity and understanding of complex and ever-changing situations. To establish and maintain effective liaison and networking between a range of professionals working instatutory and non-statutory agencies and community groups in the area engaged with a similar age group. The post holder will participate in regular reviews and ongoing planned discussions with other membersof the team and co-ordinate and organize network meetings with members of other agencies.
